3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 teddybeer (770) - Madrid, SPAIN - MAY 31, 2012
50cl bottle. Brown colour with a nice and good formation of an off-white head, creamy, frothy, large. Aroma is nutty, sweet, malty and slightly caramelish. Flavour is slightly sweet, notes of dry fruits, moderate bready and a final slightly caramelish with notes of toasty malts. Carbonation is medium. Body is medium.

Pours brown with a thin white head. Taste and flavour is yeasty bread and bananas. There’s a hint of something spicy in the nose.

Bottle. Brown with a white head. Taste and flavour is yeasty bread with some chocolate in the background. OK but nothing exciting.
2.6 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 RichardW (929) - Carlisle, Cumbria, ENGLAND - MAR 3, 2012
bottled, Rehills, Ncl. Grainy and sweet malt in the nose, some yeasty and bready flavours, a bit earthy and a soft palate. Fully agree with the comment below about it being a level entry Dunkel. There’s a lot better out there, but it’s fine as an easygoing start to the evening.

500ml flip-top from Arden Wines. Ruby slicked with thinly lacing beige. Lightly roasted aroma with a suggestion of sesame. Soft, pleasant, anonymous taste like a watery mild; sesame, milk chocolate-dipped Twiglet, black cherry and digestives at a push. Maybe slightly briny. Not as exciting as I’m making it sound, but a decent brew without off flavours.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 3/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 foxo82 (165) - Leicestershire, ENGLAND - JAN 4, 2012
UPDATED: JAN 7, 2012 Mild aroma, mid-brown in colour without much head or lacing. Taste is relatively weak and watery by German dunkel standards. Probably an entry level dunkel - I prefer a more rounded flavour.
3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Benjii (2410) - Edinburgh, SCOTLAND - JAN 4, 2012
Bottle from Peckham’s. Pours a dark brown colour with a light tan head that dies to thin lacing. Aroma of bready yeast and Weetabix with yeast and wheat also coming through. Some chocolate flavour with Weetabix and bready yeast again. Mildly carbonated with an oily mouth-feel. Alcohol isn’t overpowering.

This us a whole lot more gentle than any Faustian devilishness you might imply. Pours a thin fuzzy head, which goes quickly. Aroma of roasting nuts and toast. The taste us pleasant enough, a brown ale, rather than other dunkels I’ve tried. Sweet dark caramel, with just a hint of hop as a counterpoint. However, at 5% this is thin of body; you might as well let the malt sing rather than cover it with dry hoppiness. Not the best I’ve tried.

a good beer, but not a shining example of a Dunkel. It lacks depth and therefore I wouldn’t go crazy on this one. Another stand model of a German Dunkel.

courtesy of fiulijn - clear brown beer with a chaotic foam left; decently toasted maltiness in the nose with earthy notes; subtle but fair carbonation; decent malt backbone, some sweetness and a late earthy tartness; no real bitterness; quite long malty earthy and gently toasted finish
