2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
12oz bottle (no date, assumed 2013) from Jtclockwork, drunk 3/11/14
Tan head immediately recedes a ring atop this clear, deep mahogany brown beer.
Less coconut and raw barrel in the nose and in its place, more grainy bourbon mixed with sweet caramel and some rather ashy, dark roast. Some doughiness or oxidation, however, is inescapable. Certainly works fine with the rest of the stout, but I’d rather see lots of bright vinousness instead of more premature oxidation. No alcohol initially, though it hasnt warmed fully.
The flavor has more of the soy-like oxidation, lots of bittersweet baker’s chocolate notes and buttercreamy maltiness. Very low carbonation, slick mouthfeel and very light prune/raisin acidity on the end. Rather simple, a bit sweeter than I’d prefer and I just can’t get past the soy flavor. Texture seems filtered/force carbonated where some natural carbonation and a more engaging mouthfeel would help allay some of the heavy, lifeless flavors. Certainly nothing wrong with the beer and it’s a fine sipper if that’s what youre going for, but dosent really measure up to the better examples of the style.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 15/20
No bottling date.
Appearance: The body is an opaque black with chestnut edges. A short brown head appears for a moment, but disperses to a very thin coating with a thin and bubbly ring.
Aroma: The aroma is mild but hints at fudge, weak bourbon and a subtle fruitiness. I enjoy the aroma, but I find it to be too weak.
Taste: This tastes pretty great, chocolate and coconut are the prominent flavors with a hint of underlying bourbon and cherry throughout. The flavor is not huge, but they are balanced nicely, leaning sweet, with flavors I enjoy.
Palate: Full-bodied, almost chewy, with mild carbonation.
Overall: This isn’t an a-list bourbon barrel stout, but it’s definitely an enjoyable one that I will buy again next year. I think that this would go great with chocolate deserts.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Tap. Pours a pitch black body under a small creamy dark brown head that faded to a thin film. The nose is big and bold with a boozy bourbon quality. Lots of vanilla, wood, dark roast coffee, and a little licorice. The flavor is quite sweet with lots of vanilla, a little wood, especially bourbon-y on the finish. Not really hot though, just really heavy on the bourbon flavor. Pretty well balanced between the beer and the barrel, but the barrel wins out by just a bit. The mouthfeel is thick and chewy with some stickiness and soft fizzy carbonation. Pretty nice beer, but not better than the regular Insidious.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle from a trade at least a year ago. Aroma and flavor is bourbon-forward with a thin coffee palate and some carbonation. Taste is really representative of the barrel, but the beer definitely takes a back seat. Good beer tho.

3.6 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Bottle received from Summer Secret Santa. The pour is a deep brown/opaque color with a pencil thin tan head that fleets off to the edges of the glass. The aroma first unveils bourbon and molasses. Notes of toffee, licorice, and wood follow. The flavors consist of raisin, chocolate, sweet tobacco, bourbon, and a roasted, ashy malt finish. Medium body, low carbonation. Somewhat warming but not all that rich or hefty. Pretty solid barrel-aged Imperial Stout.
