COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Available in keg and 500ml pasteurised bottle.
A dark ale with a predominantly roast barley flavour, with a creamy head, with all the advantages that cream flow dispense offers.

I wasn’t expecting a lot from this beer, but I have to say i was pleasantly surprised. Its an intriguing, if rather odd, brew hovering in the grey area between a mild, a stout and an old ale. And, like most low strength pasteurised beers, it can’t entirely shrug off those characteristic taints of wet carboard and metal, but it has enough going on to limit their impact. It’s very dark in colour, almost black, with a ruby tinge. No creamy head in the bottled version. The aroma is a bit vinous and woody, with chocolate malt in the background. Lots of roast chocolate malt in the flavour, with a sort of sweet and sour thing going on - dry malt and jammy fruit combined. Becomes drier, with distinct acidity on the finish and a slightly astringent aftertaste. The overall impression is a bit wrinkly and dried out (sorry, slipping into SilkTork’s old lady analogies) but, in the end, I kind of liked it. 500ml pasteurised bottle from Brecon Welsh Food Store (I forget the name of it).

An opaque brown beer with a disappearing brown head. the arom ais sweet malty and roasty. The flavor is roasted malty combined with notes of roasted bread and a thin body.

Bottled. Aroma reminds me a bit of cointreau but in a darker chocolate malt kind of way. The colour is almost black and thankfully the head is nothing like that which cream flow dispense would provide as per the blurb. Taste is on the thin side; again there is a sort of orange taste but also some chocolate and coal. A bit odd really!

Bottled. Dark brown with a soft light-brown head. Rich dark chocolate malt aroma, with blood plums and prunes. Deep, rich and dense flavour. A very generous mild that punches well above it’s wait.

Fizzy headed dark beer with a strongly smoked aroma and a toffee/dry flavour. Overall a good toffee flavoured beer.

I was going to make a brief commentary on this being a rather simple, but pleasant drink with notes on the roast and chocolate qualities and otherwise simplicity of the whole when my gaze fell upon the SilkTork rating. Damn, that’s funny. .... and now I can’t get he dirty old knickers out of my mind. Damn you, Steve!

Rather like an oatmeal stout - smooth and thin bodied. Only 3.6% strength so this leans toward a mild. Call it a stout and it’s not full bodied or roasty enough. Call it a mild and it’s not half bad. It’s the sort of drink an old toothless crone with a fag in her mouth and pink curlers in her hair would be drinking in a dark corner of the pub. She also wink at you, wheezing, ’Oooh, young man!’ Now that I’ve got that image in my mind, this tastes like her damp knickers! Yugh!

Black. Evident and delicious aroma of madeira. Short, roasty, chocolatey flavour. Dry with empty finish, but what an aroma!

Excellent dark color, rich appearance, and wonderful, wonderful aroma of fruit and chocolate. I had this with pork & leek sausages, making for a very Welsh experience! Unfortunately, this beer failed me in the flavor. Too little sweetness to balance a strong finish of bitter chocolate. Definitely needs a sweet note to counterpoint the ugly bitterness. (bottle)
