Cask (gravity dispense) at Chelmsford Winter beer Festival 2005. Apparently, this was something of an experiment. It’s aged in new oak for several months and there was more than one barrel at the festival, with different ageing periods. Unfortunately, that wasn’t apparent when the beer was ordered, so I don’t know how long the one we tried was aged for. And, as I haven’t tried the unoaked version, I can’t say how it compares. Anyway, there was (not surprisingly) a distinct woodiness to this beer, but not in that earthy, musty way you get with old barrels. More of a soft vanilla kick. Some unexpected coffee hints come through in the flavour. However, I found this beer difficult to get to grips with as it was very sweet and very soft. It seemed a bit short of backbone. There’s nothing wrong with this beer - it’s just that it wasn’t as exciting as I had anticipated. Those with a sweet tooth might appreciate this beer more than I.

Sampled from cask (gravity dispense) at 6th Chelmsford Winter Beer Festival 2005.
Tar black with no head - looks like coffee. Dry roasted malt aroma with coffee and hop tones. Roasted and dry in the flavor as well. Notes of coffee, orange and pineapple. No carbonation and quite dry. Some alcohol tones but hides the 10,5% well.
