Recent times has seen the traditional hop growing regions of Germany endeavouring to breed flamboyant and expressive aroma and flavour hops to rival the varieties offered by the new world US, New Zealand and Australia growers. We thought it was about time to see what these new German hops were about and have sourced the high oil varieties of Polaris, Mandarina, Bavaria, Saphire and Herkules. This German IPA has come out bursting with fresh stone fruit, mandarin and grassy aromas. The flavour is choc full of spicy resinous hops, and is rounded out by a solid whack of bitterness.

From 330 ml bottle. Pours a clear yellow-gold with a lasting white head and lively carbonation. Aromas of grapefruit, pine, under-ripe peach, flowers and cut grass. Taste is citrus at the front, quickly giving way to a firm grapefruit and lemon zest bitterness with a touch of pine resin. White grape and orange at the end. Lingering bitter finish with a grassy aftertaste. Enjoyed this.

Pale golden colour, solid white head. Interesting sour citrus aroma with some piney flavours with grass and apple. Zesty and grassy taste and oddly light bodied. Itís okay but I wouldnít rate it amongst other Feral beers that are typically excellent

Pours a bright hazy golden with some pillowy off white head. Nose is peach, passionfruit, and an interesting note of fresh cut grass mingled with dirt. Imagine setting the blades too low and essentially peeling off all of your lawn. Flavor starts quite spicy, piney, citrussy, then a fair dose of grass on the mid palate, and the finish is again fairly spicy, a little piney, some more citrus and a nice biscuit note which I love in IPAs. Medium body with standard carbonation, nothing interesting on that front. Very interesting flavor profile. The peach character and especially the strong cut grass are something I havenít experienced in other hop varietals. Worth it simply to try the obscure hops, but still a solid beer.

So, hopfen fahrt - a ride of hops hey!? Off we go! Sourish, fresh, garden in winter is the nose with lilies, nettles, lemonbalm, apple curd, and.., just, a lot more apple. Aroma is of a Scandinavian cider - wick.., er, weird! Yellow gold, shy of bright with a shortlived, wispy head. Strikingly phenolic, twiggy bark and clove, plastic and smoke on the palate. Light in body and yet far too tangy and cloying in the finish. Clammy and sickly poured by sour citrus fruit esters. Aftertaste of sawdust. Just did not enjoy this one. Had no idea what it was even trying to achieve. Bland. (33cL, The Liquor Shed, Jandakot)

Bottle from IBS - WTF? Thereís a reason Germans donít make IPA - this is it. Bloody awful hop mix - distinct cardboard taste - just like when my home brew is crap. Honestly... itís just not a good drink.

Citrus and grassy aromas - pours a pale gold with a solid white head. Decent lace. Iím picking up lemon grass and citrus flavours throughout. Not as Hoppy as Itís been made out. Thinner than Iíd hoped, but really easy to drink.

Tap at old faithful. Pours a clear orange with a white head. Nose is quite grassy/herbal with citrus notes and zest. Quite appealing. Taste is well balanced. Citric zest and herbal/clove spices backed a subtle grassy bitterness. Liked this one ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

UPDATED: JUN 24, 2014 Tap at Old Faithful. Pours hazy golden with a firm white head. Nose is quite unique - very herbal with heavy citric zest and lemon myrtle. Taste is grassy and herbal with heavy citrus tang and stone fruits. Quite unique beer. Great balance between the herbal notes and citrus zest. I like it a lot
