Tap at Feral. A dark red to brown pour with a small beige head. Not a huge smokey aroma on it, but enough not to be outdone by the chocolate malts in there. Works well in the taste. Combines well and is very subtle so don’t expect to be blown away by a super smokey brew.
3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 jonno (1457) - JAPAN - MAY 7, 2011
Solid porter, but very little smiky character. A bit of nut, caramel and chocolate round out a thin to medium body. Again a solid rendition, but not that interesting.
3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 hawthorne00 (1439) - Melbourne, AUSTRALIA - MAY 4, 2011
Tap. Dark brown with a small light beige head. Aroma of chocolate, mace, vanilla, modest but obvious smoke. Much smokier taste with light roast, chocolate. Didn’t get much coffee. A little overcarbonated Thought it was a little thin before I saw it was only 4.5%. Liked the refined aroma and the contrastingly more free-wheeling taste.

How can you fault Feral’s beers? Fourth out the ranks on my visit and another 3.5+. Produces up a darkest brown in the shadows and deepest ruby in the lights, quite bright, shimmering. Stands headless aside a tan ring on the meniscus and almost still in appearance. Scorched peat, smoked pink meat and charred damp wood on the nose with underlying licks of milk chocolate and heavily roasted cacao beans, fresh. Very soft, creamy and almost silky mouthfeel. Medium in body, a hefty smokiness a key feature, good malty bitter swallow with an ashen smoky length. Dry in back, powdered chocolate hints draw on the saliva and some cola notes refresh otherwise its all smoky malts that just fill the mouth well. It’s the beer equivalent of a cup of coffee on a hot day, It just plain refreshes. Drank warm, drank chilled this is just a surprisingly good, not overly complex, quaffer. Another plus, plus for Feral!! (Draught at the brewery, Baskerville)
3.3 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 Mattburns (109) - USA - MAY 30, 2010
A little chocolate, and a little nutty, but mainly a smokey taste. It looked really nice. Dark brown with an big bubled, off-white,cremey head which stuck around for a while. Not bad.
2.8 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 12/20 OSLO (1133) - Ames, Iowa, USA - OCT 10, 2009
[On-tap at Clancy’s Fish Pub in Fremantle] Pours reddish-brown with a light beige head. Aroma is smoke, a touch of brown sugar, and something that reminded me of swamp gas. Luckily, the swamp gas notes were brief and not too strong. The taste was pretty much just smoke, but not in an extremely powerful way like an Aecht Schlenkerla, or even stone by Mad Monk. A little bit of non-smoked malt comes through, but it is too weak. Fairly thin, long finish--but would be surprised if it wasn’t with the smoke. Really not very impressed by this. One-dimensional, and not at all what I was hoping for when I saw the description.
3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20 bluevegie (2930) - Perth, AUSTRALIA - SEP 8, 2009
Tried first at the brewery then later at the Flying Scotsman. First time was a meaty bacony aroma but mainly only smokey notes in the taste, some astringency, drank ok. Second time taste had mellowed out somewhat not so much smoke just ash in the taste and more sessionable.
