3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
From a 330ml bottle on 30/1/2013 (ABV 4.9%, not 4.7%). Pours a very dark amber with a big head. Has a strong smell of smoky bacon. Flavour wise, there’s lots of chocolate malt, molasses, and smoked meats. The bitterness is medium and the carbonation relatively lively. All up, a very pleasant smoked beer. Quite surprised it isn’t rated more highly.

2.7 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20
bottle from dan murphys in newcastle. dark brown with a shortlived head; surprisingly flat all round - light leathery smoke character but barely lingers, hint of musk; quick, modest bitterness, hints of cocoa; solid but really could use a lot more rauchmalz

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Cask at Keg & Brew, Sydney on 15th September 2015. Sepia brown with off-white ring-and-film. Roasty malt aroma, continuing in the liquid stage to be joined by sweet caramel and smoked meat flavours. A subtle sour touch. Roasty finish with sweet, fruity echoes around the mouth before a subtle bitterness begins to emerge. Medium-bodied with a smooth mouthfeel.

3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle poured into a glass. Thin tan head on a fairly flat dark porter base. A smoky nose with aromas of bacon bits that I found strangely pleasing. Rich malty notes with a hint of coffee ground bitterness an an astringent aftertaste that although not particularly pleasant, had me coming back for more. A really interesting beer worth a try, but not really something you could drink more than a couple of.

3.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 13/20
From bottle in porter glass. Pours dark brown with modest head but prominent smoked hickory and roasted malt on the nose. This carries through to the palate and the finish is a bit sweet. Enjoyable and unique but I couldn’t have too many.

2.3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 8/20
There’s an off-putting aroma of three-day old sliced ham overlaying some roasted coffee and toast aromas. The taste is more pleasant though that off ham is still present, and the palate is a little thin.

3.5 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Bottle - pours brown with a small beige head. Malt dominates the aroma, coffe and choc. There is a bit of smoke, although I admit I’m outside and the fire is on. Taste is dry with nice bitter crisp roast malt. The body is as you would expect for a porter. Not a big rauchbier but nice none the less.

3.3 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
(Bottle) Clear dark brown with no head - looks like flat coke. Pleasant and unusual aroma - a nice interesting and rich smokiness - definitely wood, but reminds me of bacon! Maybe a hint of coffee. Light body and light carbonation. Taste is pleasant and interesting - the smokiness is the most apparent component, and it has a richness to it, it is just what is needed to add interest to what is otherwise quite a basic beer. There’s some pleasant dark roast malt sweetness undertones, and a little porter sharpness. It’s a pleasant take on a smoked porter - not challenging like some smoked beers and some porters can be - but there is room for improvement.

2.2 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 5/20
Nice nose that only hints at a smokey beer, chocolate and coffee aromas dominate as a porter should. Doesnt hold a head and very little carbonation. Very shallow, dry flavour profile with a harsh bitterness that dominates. Tannins and a dry finish whigh releases a pleasing coffee flavour. Thin beer that could have done with just a little (any at all) sweetness to entice the drinker to want more than one.

Followed a heavy streak meal, expecting a good refreshing coffeeish maltiness and sweet-bitterness. Although porter itself is not my cup of tea, this one has no character I should say. Starts with malty sweetness and hurries to a bit watery exit. Hmmmm,,,
