The Big Caboose Red Ale has arrived in town and shall soon be departing to come to a halt on many a shelf across BC and Alberta. And, if itís like the rest of our tasty little canned treats, it will undoubtedly pick up steam and have a whole load of party goers jumping on board the Big Caboose. Named after the train that rolls through Fernie, sounding its horn as it goes, itís an apt beer for the start of the fall. Sporting our new can design and look, it not only looks the part, but also tastes darn good.

No retention and no hops. Smells of caramel, molasses and sweet malt. Tastes of amber caramel and malt. Very light bitter finish. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Amber. Has a lot of toasty caramel character. Decent bitterness, bready. Unadventurous beer but at least itís well-balanced.

355ml can. Pours a clear dark reddish amber with a medium, short lived, beige head that leaves spotty lacing. Mild aroma of caramel malt and bread. Sweet flavour of caramel malt, bread and a metallic note with a dry, mildly bitter, grassy hop finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation.

Pours a clear brownish red with a thin tan head that leaves a decent amount of lace. Aroma is malty, caramel, floral and fruity esters. Flavour is roasted malts, caramel, toffee, bread crusts, and mild fruity esters.

Can. Deep amber brown pour, clear with a light tan head. Aroma is light but quite nice - sweet and malty, caramel and apple notes, a bit of grain. Flavour is much the same - caramel malt and apple juice, medium-light body with decent balance and a dry finish. Boring, but as far as an easygoing amber goes, pretty nice.

Draft - Caramel, burnt sugars and some slight soured malts and citrus. Cloudy Amber with a nice beige head. Bitter citrusy, light amber malts and lots of peel. Not a fan.

On tap. Pours a dark reddish amber light head. Aromas of dusty toasted malts, dough, and brunt sugar. Flavors of bready malts and copper with a hint of grassy hops. Bland.

Can to Grolsch pint glass, beer pours a transparent dark red with a slight off white top. Aroma carries sweet burnt caramel, vanilla, toffee and butterscotch. Not much in the way of hop aroma except for a bit of grass. Taste wise this beer is odd...burnt and sour notes dominate, no sweetness to back it up and the hop bitterness is pretty rough. Not to mention itís pretty watery as well. The beer is fairly palatable...itís quite fizzy, watery and on the dry side so itís quite drinkable. Overall...welll...boring and quite frankly not super good, though thereís nothing hugely wrong with it that makes it undrinkable.

355 ml can from a sampler twelve-pack at Sobeys Liquor outlet. Love the ghostly train story on the side of the can. Served in a freebie lager/pint glass branded with Molson Canadian and the logo for the Arizona Coyotes. Pours a clear, deep reddish amber with a copious, smoothly bubbled tan head that lasts and leaves an interesting variety of lacing. Didnít note carbonation. Aroma is light malt sweetness. Flavor is lightly sweet, dark fruits, caramel, hop spiciness/black pepper and a wee bit of smokiness. Pleasant body and mouthfeel with a speck of lingering pepper. A delicious red ale with more flavor action going on than others Iíve sampled.
