COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Our most decadent brew yet – a rich, strong winter black ale. A healthy addition of chocolate malt, plus infusions of dark organic cocoa and curacao orange peel provide unique flavour. Extra aging on oak adds smoothness and complexity.

Bottle share. Almost completely black with a bubbly light tan cap. A seaweed, roasted nuts, mocha, chocolate. Taste is roasted malt, light chocolate. I wish the taste was a bit more exciting like the aroma. Ooh. A burp leaves a bit of a dry zesty malt.

650ml brown bottle. Pours very dark brown, near black. Small creamy head on top. Nose has lots of cocoa and chocolate malt. The beer has cocoa and chocolate malt flavours, bit of citrus. Finishes with chocolate malts, late bitterness. Aftertastes of citrus peel and chocolate malt and some toastiness. Medium bodied, smooth mouthfeel. Enjoyable winter warmer.

Noir avec un petit col marron. L’arôme de malt, mélasse et réglisse. Le goût est très similair, mais un peu aqueux. C’est ok...

Bomber. Deep dark hueless brown, tan foam mostly fades. Aroma of dark roasted malts, chocolate and vanilla. Bitter dark roast, sweet chocolate, oaky vanilla taste, a hint of orange. Average carbonation, medium-full bodied, low hopped. Short sweet smooth coco finish. DNFL (Definitely Not For Lagerboys)

Bomber. Pours very dark brown, dissipating beige head. Nose is roast, chocolate, licorice, wood. Flavour is same, licorice more up-front, some cherry cough syrup from the mixture of the flavours and alcohol that coats the mouth a bit, pretty thin mouthfeel. I didn’t read that it was oaked but now that makes sense.

Bottle, Christmas dinner with in-laws. Dark brown, beige head. Rich chocolate, quite fudgey actually, some prunes too. Nice vanilla sweetness presumably from the barrel. Full bodied and very well balanced, surprising in a good way. MUCH better than any other BC winter seasonal I’ve tried this year, and possibly one of Fernie’s best. Very enjoyable.

Rating #846 - December 20, 2013 - 2 oz sample from a 650ml bottle courtesy of Curtis from Fernie Brewing. 8%. Pours a rich black-brown with a prominent offwhite head, decent retention. Aroma is toffee, burnt sugar, nutmeg, cocoa bean, mild citrus. Medium carbonation, medium-high alcohol warmth. Palate is sticky burnt sugar, mild vanilla and cocoa, lots of espressoey roast malt bitterness. Great winter beer. Would have easily competed with OK Spring and Granville Winter Ales if in 6 packs.

UPDATED: DEC 18, 2013 On tap at Bitter Tasting Room and in 650 ml bomber from Legacy Liquor, both in Vancouver. A black beer with a modest tan head. A very pleasantly sweet, fruity and malty ale. Impressions of chocolate. Absolutely delicious. Yes!

pours extra dark brown with a nice foamy head, good retention, micro CO2, sticky lacing, non-visible activity. Sweet malts and light roast on the nose. Attack: 6/10-sweetness, creamy/silky mouthfeel throughout Mid-palate: sweet malts, light roast coffee, creamy chocolate, citrus overtones Finish: silky buttery mouthfeel, light sourness, light roast-med bitter coffee long finish Robust, flavourful, full-bodied, and balanced brew from Fernie. Good value for such a delicious beer.
