This time we opted for a robust Maple Porter, going by the name of Sap Sucker, which started its maiden voyage from the brewery to shelves throughout BC, on Friday December 5th – perfect timing for December festivities and those thirsty needs that generally accompany the season of good will. It’s a deliciously dark and robust Porter, with a delicate but flavourful touch of maple syrup.

Dark brown with an off-white head. Aroma is maple, caramel, chocolate, hazelnut. Medium-light bodied, slightly creamy mouthfeel, sweet on the palate with a nice hint of roast. Taste us chocolate, toffee, maple, roasted grains, hint if coffee. Decent.

Plenty of cocoa on the nose with dark chocolate and a touch of roast. Opaque dark brown/black body is topped by a low but lasting tan head that coats the sides of the glass with lacing. Chocolate/cocoa flavour is predominant but never overwhelming. Nice bitterness keeps it from becoming cloying or overly sweet. There’s an almost salty edge to the mineralic aftertaste which is quite interesting. Although I don’t get any maple flavour perhaps that contributes to the depth of flavour here. Medium body with very nice, soft bubbled but gently effervescent and lightly pointy carbonation that offsets the otherwise smooth and creamy texture.

Bottle from Dan and Julie. Dark red pour with an off-white head. Aroma is lots of caramel and maple. Taste is maple syrup and hops!

The only real weakness of this beer is the aroma, but it tastes much better than it smells. For those who enjoy maple flavored stouts and porters, this will definitely satisfy. The maple flavor is anything but delicate, but it still keeps a good balance.

On tap at Bitter on Hastings in Vancouver. Appropriately dark. A very sweet, fruity and pleasant porter, but honest to Jehosaphat, I’m not getting any maple here! Nice porter, though.

I was tipped-off to this one, but ended up underwhelmed. Sampled at Great Canadian Beer Fest. Aroma was ok, appearance was dark brown. I was expecting a rich maple and malt flavor, but was met instead with a disappointing porter that was more like an average brown ale. Slight maple flavour is an understatement - tasting the maple in this drink is like finding a needle in a haystack. Ends up an average brown ale in flavor. Disappointed.

Pours a very dark brown with small tan head that disappears quickly. Aroma is roasted malts, chocolate, earthy and some sweet, toffee, bready, and some coffee. Flavour is sweet chocolate, faint earthy bitterness, roasted malts lightly burnt, and a dry roasted malt/coffee finish.

Pours a clear dark brown with a red tinge and a small frothy brown head. Aroma of maple, roasted malts, dark dried fruits and chocolate. Taste is roasted malts, dried fruits, coffee, maple and a nice low bitterness throughout. Medium to full body and over its pretty good but the sweetness becomes too much after a bit.

Chocolate brown pour with creamy off-white head. Coffee, chocolate and maple notes. Subtle coffee flavor, easy drinking and not overpowering. Slippery and oily. Reminded me of an espresso stout. Enjoyed this one.

Pours a dark black color with a tall dense, creamy, tan head. Aroma has a very malty nose with lots of chocolate malt coming through first, light plum notes, light nondeScript sugary sweetness and a touch of earthy hops presence. Flavor starts off with a plum, chocolate, light cherry and light roasted malt presence but this quickly transitions to a very sweet that is boarder line cloying. Body feels very hefty and holds the flavors very well. This brew was weird in that it started off with a great flavor. As you drank more of the beer, the sweetness built to be too much. The base beer is really good and I would love to try their non-maple porter offering.
