This time we opted for a robust Maple Porter, going by the name of Sap Sucker, which started its maiden voyage from the brewery to shelves throughout BC, on Friday December 5th – perfect timing for December festivities and those thirsty needs that generally accompany the season of good will. It’s a deliciously dark and robust Porter, with a delicate but flavourful touch of maple syrup.

Pours dark, dark brown, with a light brown head. Light aroma of chocolate, roasted malt, a bit of dust in the beginning, but that quickly disappears. Taste of coffee, chocolate, a slight sourness (some black malt perhaps?), medium sweet, medium to heavy bitter for the style (which I like). Medium bodied, average carbonation, ends quite bitter and with a pleasant chocolate feeling in the mouth. Overall a good beer. I’m a bit disappointed though with the lack of maple character, I could not specifically pick that out anywhere.

Very deep walnut to black colour with a tan frothy head and lace. Roasted malt, maple syrup aroma. Rich maple, coffee, chocolate roasted malt goodness. Slight bitterness on the palette. Enjoyable porter.

Bottle. Pours clear cola black, thin, non-persistent off-white head, poor lacing. Nose is roasted, sweet, lifted barley, very pronounced ’lactose’ character, smells like a good Sweet Stout. Good roast and light rootbeer character. No real maple notes though. Flavours are creamy, roasty, and very smooth. Moderately sweet, but well-balanced by the roasty notes. Maple shows up a little here, but if it wasn’t on the label, I doubt if I’d be able to pick it out. Overall a really nice Porter, the lack of maple is no loss, really, maybe the best effort yet by Fernie!

Plenty of cocoa on the nose with dark chocolate and a touch of roast. Opaque dark brown/black body is topped by a low but lasting tan head that coats the sides of the glass with lacing. Chocolate/cocoa flavour is predominant but never overwhelming. Nice bitterness keeps it from becoming cloying or overly sweet. There’s an almost salty edge to the mineralic aftertaste which is quite interesting. Although I don’t get any maple flavour perhaps that contributes to the depth of flavour here. Medium body with very nice, soft bubbled but gently effervescent and lightly pointy carbonation that offsets the otherwise smooth and creamy texture. Tulip glass. Just above fridge temperature. Bottle purchased at the BCLS at Hellsgate in March 2011.

Bottle. Started with a big head on very dark brown. Aroma of roast malt and a lot of nuts and coffee, surprisingly very little maple. Flavour is not overpowering maple. More subtle alluring growing maple taste with coffee and nut character. A little thin and metallic. Doesn’t finish well and a big bottle is too much.

Bottle from BC Liquors, Robson St., Vancouver
Black color; medium sized compact head, but reducing quickly to a thin layer. Mild aroma of roasted malt and light liquorice. It has a good body texture; the roasted malts are quite smooth; there is a light perception of burnt malts too; but there is also some liquorice, that I don’t fancy too much; traces of vanilla and coffee. It has some degree of complexity, and it’s well constructed. Pleasant.

Bottle. Not sure whether there may be some variability in product quality, or whether the difference lies in the acumen of the various raters’ noses and palates, but I found this beer to have rather pronounced maple syrup character in both the aroma and flavour. Very nicely integrated with chocolatey malts, sweet but not cloying. Medium bodied, tasty. The best big bottle brew from Fernie yet!
