Very surprising and very good beer. Pours a thick black. Aroma is exceptional, wood, vanilla, chocolate. Lots of roast and just a touch of bourbon. Flavor is much the same, lots of big and bold imperial goodness. What I liked about this one was that the bourbon was light enough to add to the complexity and flavor, and didn’t overpower anything. The chocolate and roast were specifically nice in this one. Slightly oily mouthfeel, which I like. I wouldn’t mind having this one again at all.

Batch 1, 2008 vintage, bottle #43. The first batch was aged for 180 days in a single 23 year old Pappy Van Winkle bourbon barrel.
The body pours virtually black, subtle hints of mahogany showing at the outer reaches. A small, foamy, mocha colored head displays nice retention, while big arches of lacing slowly break apart into glacial sheets that stick to the glass in a failed attempt to rejoin the body. The nose is really great, big notes of quality dark chocolate, smooth, scorched caramel, and dark, earthy fruit working incredibly well with the soft sour mash bourbon infusion and subtle, oaky vanilla overtones. Flavors are even more impressive, approaching perfection, in fact. This brew is so smooth, it tastes like a chocolate-mocha-bourbon milk shake with softly sweet vanilla creme and hints of roasty coffee. Rarely does one come across a brew so perfectly integrated with bourbon. Medium-full bodied and ultra-smooth, slick, and silky on the tongue, the palate just rocks. I wouldn’t hesitate to put this one up against barrel-aged Speedway, as it could certainly hold its own. Fantastic beer.

Thanks to Turdferguson for sharing! Heavy pour with a moderate cappuccino head. The nose is pretty complex, with oak and bourbon not coming across nearly as sharp or acrid as you get in some of the other, more highly rated examples of the style. Smooth and chocolate, with a waxy palate. There’s a pleasant sense of earthy, herbal characteristics in the middle, something organic that seems to evoke the best of the wood, and also to integrate pretty well with the roasts that are so abundant. Very fine entry.

Bottle. Tasty impy. A bit more complexity to this one than the other big names out there. It isn’t too sweet but it isn’t overly bitter either. The bourbon and oak leave a nice imprint on the brew. The best impy I’ve had in a good bit.

Thanks a ton to turdferguson for sharing. Pours a dark black with a chestnut head. The nose is nice, great balance between the bourbon and oak character and the base RIS, chocolate, roasty, a little earthy, mild tobacco. Excellent balance in the flavor, an almost perfect presentation of the bourbon and barrel over the stout, some tobacco comes through in the flavor, rich, warming alcohol, a little earthy, chocolate. Nice thick warming palate. Great stout.

On tap at FoBAB. Poured black with a yellowy-tan head. The aroma picked up sweet toasty vanilla, semi-sweet chocolate, and bourbon with a touch of inexplicable cleanser. The flavor had tangy bourbon throughout with a deep chocolate base.. brighter toward the back with bourbon and oak.. strong finish, but it maintained its balance. Medium-plus bodied with low carbonation on the palate.. spicy and well-balanced.. the mouthfeel was the best part of this solid drink.

Tap at Toronado. Pours with a pitch black color and a faint head. Aromas of bourbon and oak, perhaps a bit of vanilla.
The vanilla is more prominent in the flavor profile, the bourbon is there but fairly subtle which is good. Some oakiness as well as chocolate. A very well balanced beer.
