The first bottling of the 2008 vintage came from one barrel... A Pappy Van Winkle barrel that held Bourbon for 23 years. We have 7 more of these barrels ranging in age from 17 to 23 years. The next bottling is a blend of three of these barrels. The blend which will be marked ’2nd bottling’ or something to that effect so they can be identified. The remaining 4 barrels will be split into draft and yet a third bottling. The 2009 Eclipse will be aging longer than the 2008. The 2008 aged for 180 days and the 4 remaining barrels are most likely going to hit 225 days. We are brewing the base Imperial Stout in March allowing us even further aging time prior to it’s mid-December release... The amount produced will increase from 17bbls to 34bbls for ’09.

Several different releases including unwaxed, "Brewers Reserve", Pinkish Wax. Available starting Late Fall 2008.

FoBAB 2008 offering: #203 - Another offering from Todd I got to enjoy and it looks like this falls into being rating #300 as I go through the backlog from the RB downtime. Pours a ruby over mignight hue with little to no head. Aromas are fitting of the style, Bourbon and oak mixed with toasted malt, chocolate, and vanilla. Taste verifies: Burnt malt mixing well with chocolate, vanilla, and lighter coffee notes. Moves into more oaky and bourbon finish. Not really too boozy. Cheers!

Special thanks to Beerlando. This beer is exactly as JMFG described it below. Black, alcohol, oak, bourbon and a little vanilla. Pretty darn good.

Another old rating. Aroma of a lot of alcohol and some dark fruits. A little sweetness, tobacco, but pretty pretty tastey. Didnt seem as smooth as this could have been . Still a great beer.

Really nice Pappy version-courtesy of dionysus at RBWG 2011-Phoenix. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma has beautiful bourbon aroma which is understated, if that’s possible. Sweet malt and bourbon flavors with a little heat. Full bodied and creamy texture. Finish is all bourbon. This is a good beer, but other concurred that GI Rare was a bit better. UPDATED: APR 12, 2010 Several 4 ounce samples at Raley Field Brewfest. Aroma has nice hints of bourbon flavor with sweet chocolate notes and some vanilla oaky aromas as well. I think I smell some coconut and perhaps some light floral hints. Rather aromatic. Mostly opaque dark brown/black body with a medium tan head. Very nice sweet chocolate flavors to start. Some coffee, vanilla, and bourbon come through in the middle. Sticky and chewy with a light booziness towards the end. More bourbon flavors present themselves at the end as well. A nicely balanced BA Impy.------- of all, this is bullshit. I don’t see why the 2008 vintage which was aged in Pappy Van Winkle Barrels is considered the same beer as the 2009 beer that was in Elijah Craig barrels. The fact that the 2009 ratings are split 3 ways depending on the different barrels makes even less sense. Neverthless, this was the $19 bottle dipped in purple wax. It was drank side by side with the green wax bottle. Aroma is lots of sweet bourbon with a little more chocolate stout in the nose of this one. This is nicely aromatic, and preferred to the green wax bottle. It has a nice sweetness. Mostly opaque dark brown/black body with a small light tan head and nice legging present. Start is much sweeter and chocolatey than the green wax bottle. Lots of bourbon character is present in the middle. Fairly dominant. Has some booziness in the end that is a little harsh. Followed by roastiness. Not as drinkable or as balanced as the green wax bottle. A totally different beer than the 2008 beer. The rating shown is the rating for the retired 2008 beer, which is different. The rating of the purple wax is: (8/4/7/4/15 - 3.8)

FoWaBAB 2008. Pours dirty oil black with no head. The nose is rich with bourbon, marshmallow, and oak. Tastes kind of like Hershey syrup with a nice bourbon burn. Quite full bodied with average carbonation. Dry cocoa powder finish.
