4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Silphium (2972) - East Lansing, Michigan, USA - JAN 13, 2013
Green wax, bottle #1862, shared by badnewsbeers. Deep opaque brown/black body, thin tan head. Nose of coconut, vanilla, and big oak, also roast and molasses. Inky. Oaky body with lots of roast, chocolate, and coffee bean, soft and spicy, robust and rich but not syrupy or cloying. Potent and rich. Very nice.

Bottle. Black hardly any head. Smells tastes of ash wood earth/dirt. Booze coffee dark chocolate. Rye Pretty thin not much carb. To me I see it more as a porter. Good but maybe just too roasty right now but it’s frsh no age on it. Least fav of bunch.
3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20 Dodgrblu (310) - Sacramento, California, USA - JAN 11, 2013
Third round of the Barrel Flight at Pangea, admittedly I’m worried about my palate at this point. Not as sweet as the Elijah and Fitz.

Bottle - not sure who provided this one at the tasting. Poured a dark black color with a wispy off-white ehad. Aroma was some barrel notes, vanilla, chocolate with some coffee. Smooth chocolate notes, vanilla, touch of coffee was pretty enjoyable.

3.9 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20 Huhzubendah (1980) - Washington DC, USA - DEC 30, 2012
I shared a bottle of this with my wife at our campsite in Vermont. Lovely.
The beer is a deep, dark brown with a half inch of dark beige head that leaves a thick sheet of lacing on the walls of the glass. The aroma brings oak, booze, roast, malt. The flavor is perhaps a tad more bready than usual, with a hint of bitterness in the back. Must be the rye malt. Tasty. Additional notes of chocolate and vanilla. Really, quite a flavorful beer, and deceptively easy to drink. Fairly light in the mouthfeel for the style. Well balanced, with lingering notes of oak and bourbon. Well done.

UPDATED: JAN 18, 2013 2011 bottling courtesy of Secret Santa Alex, thanks for the opportunity!
Pours a solid black with a huge tan head that slowly dissipates, but never leaves and sticks much lace to the sides of the glass. The aroma coming out of my glass is almost heavenly. Roasty chocolate caramel and coffee wrapped in a subtle but evident barrel treatment of vanilla, coconut, white frosting, and rye whiskey. The flavor starts off sweet and malty with lots of roast, brown sugar, and chocolate. The barrel notes rush in with vanilla, whiskey, light wood to remind us that this is no ordinary stout. Lingering roasty whiskey last long after every sip. Thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy creamy mouthfeel. This is a really good stout, I can’t believe I haven’t tried this before. Now to get me some more.

66cl Bottle at Sloshfest, 6 of the 2011 bottlings side-by-side. Black colour, beige-brown head. Aroma is less rounded than the others I’ve had, more ashy, wood, whisky, hard roasted malts, chocolate. Flavour is sweet, whisky, hard roasted malts, bitter coffee, molasses, a little ash, chocolate, bitter roasted finish. Fullbodied.
3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 timfoolery (885) - California, USA - DEC 14, 2012
Bottle at DBS on a taster. Aroma and flavor really hits you in the face and stays round and peppery. Same other aspects of Totality, but the bourbon comes out more. Great beer.

On tap at Gourmet Haus.
Aroma is quite fruity with cherry, plum and a bit of raisin. A touch of vanilla, oak and bourbon but the esters are surprisingly strong. A but if rye character.
Appearance pours a deep brown but not black with brown notes is the edges. The head is thin and light brown; it recedes quickly.
Flavor has more chocolate and vanilla character than aroma. Esters are more prevalent than other versions. Some sweet notes, but also a bit of astringency in the finish. Rye bourbon and alcohol also noticeable in the finish.
Mouthfeel is creamy but a bit thin compared to the GHS blend. The astringency is low but noticeable as is the alcohol character. Alcohol heat is rather warming.
Overall nice, but I think the blends are better. This one has a lot more character from the underlying bourbon than the GHS blend. Enjoyable, but less refined.
