This entry serves as the core listing for all Imperial Eclipse Stout vintages aged in rye barrels. These include:

2011 Vintage:
Rittenhouse Rye Version. (GREEN WAX w/ "2011")

2010 Vintage:
Rittenhouse Rye version. (GREEN WAX with "2010")

2009 Vintage:
Heaven Hill Rye version. (GREEN WAX with "2009")

Original batch was just 2009 Rye barrels sourced from Heaven Hill. For the 2010 release, Todd delved deeper with the barrel provider and found his barrels (and previous barrels) to all be Rittenhouse barrels. Hence, the alias.

Damn Hop Head thanks for bringing this badboy to the tasting today. Pours black with a light brown head. Nose is sweet, with a touch of booziness. Taste is sweet, with milk chocolate, hidden alc, tasty beer no doubt.

Woodshop. Thanks cloudskipper! Pours a black color with a light brown head. Aroma is sweet and delicious. A beautiful bourbon aroma blossums with chocolate and coffee and a great roasted note. Flavor is smooth and slighlty sweet with a nice bittersweet chocolate and roasted malt keeping things in check. Great brew.

Green wax bottle (2262/2009) from the Co-op in Davis, CA. Pours black with a light tan head. Smells of smooth burnt malt, oak and vanilla. Full bodied with mild carb. The flavor is sweet smooth burnt malt with vanilla and oak. Could be a touch of bourbon. Drinks well.

Sampled at the RBSG Summer Grand Tasting (Grand Rapids, MI). Pours a nice nice blackish brown pour, thicker, small offwhite tannish head laces small. Aromas are cocoa and caramel, toasty malts, bourbon. Vanilla tannins, boozy alcohol, rich roasty and sweet malts with a touch of chocolate chip cookie. Initial is smooth and mellow, cocoa moves into vanilla tannins, coffee, caramel, roasty malts and a decent boozy. Similar nose to EC but a decent amount stronger and more flavorful barrel character. Tasty, complexy, cocoa and vanilla tannins, roasty malts, coffee is lighter. A strong beer, yet some silky elements are there. Very nice

Draft at FoBAB 8. This is the Heaven Hill Rye. This pours a deep and full black with a dark tan head. Nose is Rich and super roasty, moreso than the Rittenhouse Rye. The hops are super-faded and this one is all roast. Some smokey and spicy rye notes peak out as well. Taste is much the same, light sweetness and roast. Very tasty. 8-5-7-4-16 (4.0) Rittenhouse version, also at FoBAB 8. This one is easily the most refined of the four versions at FoBAB. Appearance is the same. Nose shows more vanilla, less roast and more rich cocoa and molasses notes. Taste is spicy and slightly more sweet. Very well integrated and better whiskey character. 9-5-9-4-17 (4.4)

Tasted at the 5th Annual Bistro Barrel Aged Beer Fest on 11/13/2010. This Imperial Stout pours a deep black color from the tap. Small to medium sized tan foamy head. The aroma is chocolate, coffee, vanilla, and dark fruit, with rye whisky and wood. A full bodied Imperial Stout. The malts are chocolate and coffee, with touch of dark fruit, a hint of vanilla, some wood and rye. The hops are earthy. This one seemed a little thinner and not as smooth as the Four Roses Version. The flavor was very nice, the rye and wood compliment the chocolate, coffee and vanilla sweetness of the beer very well. Mouthfeel is full and round. Finish is clean and smooth. Aftertaste is slightly sweet.

UPDATED: APR 5, 2011 2009 Heaven Hill Rye, thanks whoever sent me this all those months ago. It is what it is, a boozy, sweet monster of vanilla, chocolate, oak, slight rye spiciness, anise. Don’t pick up much coffee or roasted malt bitterness. I like it a lot. Apparently this was my 50th Imperial Stout rating. How appropriate.

Bottle pours black with tan head that does not last long. Aroma is vanilla, fig, prune, bittersweet chocolate. Heavy mouthfeel. Flavor follows the nose and has a bourbon component in the middle along with a touch of coffee. Finish is long with a touch of rye spice. Very nice.

Shared by Daknole. Pour is deep brown/black with a tan head. Aroma shows lots of dark chocolate, bourbon, and roasted malt. Flavor shows the same with a definate rye spiciness as well as some black cherry. Overall body is full and viscous with a great boozy finish.

2010 bottle #960 on NYE. The rye barrel definitely adds a spicy flavor that’s lacking in their other barrel aged beers. Flavor has chocolate, molasses, vanilla and the rye bourbon. Very tasty.
