Sampled from the tap at 2011 FOBAB. Poured a cloudy dark amber brown with a yellowish brown head that dissipated to the edges. Aroma had a good amount of toffee with some sweet grains and caramel backed by barrel. Flavor had a good amount of brandy with sweet grains, caramel and a hint of sweet chocolate.

On tap @ Churchillís. Murky dark amber pour with an off-white head. Smells like booze. Lots of rye, some caramel, and vanilla. Quite a bit of dark fruit and wood as well. Thereís a bunch of golden raisin, some plum, and sweet vanilla. Big time booze and astringent, charred oak. Just kind of a mess all around.

>> Brandy & Rye version- murky brown pour, low carbonation, weak foam. Mildew, tequila, tomato paste, brown sugar aroma. Taste is brown sugar and maple up front moving to some paper and anesthetic bite. Harsher finish. Barrel character comes off as mildew instead of dark, warming alcohol.

Tap at Churchillís Pub. Pours clear brown with a medium, creamy beige head, medium retention with good lacing. Aroma is brandy, figs, dates, vanilla, oak, earthy and spicy rye malt with light caramel and toffee notes. Flavor is sweet malt dominant, brandy, vanilla, oak, dates and figs with boozy notes and a sweet finish. Full body and light carbonation.

mine had 12 yo elijah craig barrels...
"A sizeable improvement on the "pretty good" base barleywine. Takes all the rough edges off that beer and makes for a decadent treat. Maaaaybe slightly overbarreled, but in this case it really works. Vanilla, oak and bourbon slightly dominate the malt and spicy hops of the base. *I found a 3/1 barrel to non-barrel blend was near perfect."

Tap at the brewpub. Aroma is brown sugar. Full bodied, or nearly. Flavor is brown sugar with definite whiskey notes. Not getting much oak, and not sure I can differentiate the brandy. Alcohol is arguably present. Itís a bit earthy, and heading to dry in the finish. Doesnít get there tho. Maybe itís a bit bitter. Very nice.

Deep reddish mahogany in color... Aroma of caramel, toffee, whiskey, vanilla... Flavor is rich caramel, with prevalent notes of brandy whiskey, vanilla and a spicy kick on the finish... Delicious

Draft at brewpub. Pour hazy brown. Clean malt and toffee nose. Taste very woody and whiskey up front. Malty mid palate. Fairly strong alcohol finish. I tried to like it, but just couldnít. The barrel treatment overpowered the base beer in my opinion. .

Snifter at Fifty Fifty. Pours a hazy dark amber /copper color with a medium sized creamy beige head. The aroma has caramel malts, wood, spicy rye notes with some alcohol. The flavor has everything from the nose with someeearthy qualities and bitterness to the finish. Interesting take on the barley wine.

Had on draft at the brewery. This was aged in a rye barrel. Spearmint, oily, very fruity, vanilla, alcohol warmth, caramel, sweeter then the base, very malty and rich, viscous mouth feel. A great barrel aged beer, I did enjoy the base beer a little more.

pour is a rustic orange with a tight tan head. The nose has the overly sweet note I get often from brandy aged beers. Almost like a sweet magic marker but I donít believe it to be acetone. Light chocolate notes and sweet muddled malts. Cherry and berry notes in back add some pleasantry. The taste is similar but the marker isnít really present. Still a touch sweet brandy on a sweet beer with berries and light chocolate undertones. The body is very drinkable, full but not heavy and a nice Assertivve carb. There is some alcohol heat in the finish but not overwhelming by any stretch. Not horrible but overly sweet and brandy isnít my favorite barrel aging apparatus as I find it makes the beer cloying.
