Bottle @ Armin’s bachelor party. Thanks Armin and Caleb! Pours a deep black appearance with a dark brown head. Pretty whiskey forward, toffee, vanilla, a bit oaky, rich dark chocolate aroma. Intense but tasty whiskey, caramel, vanilla, dark chocolate, plum, light fig flavor with some mild tannic notes. Nice one!

Bottle (#552, 2011) thanks to Jack, at THE Eclipse tasting, 2012. It pours very dark brown, with a small-medium tan head. The nose is liquorice, aniseed, roasted malt, smoke, charcoal, toasted coconut and vanilla. The taste is liquorice, roasted malt, charred wood, bitterness, medicinal, alcohol seems more present than the other versions, treacle, bourbon, cola, soft dark fruit, raisin and cherry, with a dry, fairly alcoholic finish. Full body, moderate carbonation and syrupy mouth-feel. Decent.

THE Eclipse Tasting. Opaque dark brown beer, good tan head. Smooth palate, light and a little dry. The dark malt is lighter here and with a touch of aniseed. Sweet but subtle vanilla oak. Again a touch of dark fruits. Finishes semi dry. The alcohol a little more obvious in this one and the palate lighter. Good though!

Bottle at THE Eclipse Tasting, London. Bottle #552, yellow wax. Thanks to Jack! Pours dark brown with a creamy, brown cap. Nose holds vanilla, honey, light nostril-stinging booze. Big sweet flavor with rich brown bread, mellow chocolate, light vanilla, light alcohol. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Moderately warming on the finish with light roast, dark sugars, raisins, licorice, some honey and light brownies. Nice beer with a well-rounded character. Rich, but not too sweet.

Bottle @ THE Eclipse Tasting. Yellow waxed bottle #552. The pour’s deep brown with a medium tan head. The nose is toasted wood, hints of booze, plenty of chocolate syrup and spicy Christmas cake. Hints of raisin. The taste is sharper and boozier than other Eclipses I’ve tried. There’s notes of roasted chocolate malt, some wood and plenty of boozy barrel. Sweet butterscotch and licorice candy on the finish. The body’s big and viscous, oily. Not bad, but a bit blunt and flabby. Pretty good.

2011 vintage, bottle #637. Pours a dark chesnut brown color that’s completely opaque with a half finger beige head that immediately settles into a thin ring. Spotty lacing left behind. Slightly smokey aroma with a strong barrel character that’s nicely integrated into the sweet and roasted malt notes of the base beer. Some spicy bourbon but the other barrel notes really stand out in the nose. Lots of earthy oak, vanilla bean, marshmallow and toasted coconut complimenting hints of coffee bean, toffee, toast and dark chocolate. Smells pretty nice but could use more of a bourbon presence. Medium bodied but a bit thinner than expected with a stronger bourbon presence than the aroma suggests. Still, the barrel character is well integrated into the flavor of the beer without completely dominating the other notes. Some dry, toasted oak, almond and faint vanilla along with spicy, sweet bourbon lingering over the malt backbone into a dry finish. The smokiness from the nose I’d barely noticeable and it’s a bit sweeter than expected with hints of chocolate cake, fudge, toffee and burnt toast. Good bourbon flavor with little to no heat. ABV excellently masked making it deceptively drinkable. Not very complex and the spirit presence isn’t as strong as in some of the other treatments but it’s still very enjoyable.
