Pour out of 750 mL bottle, 2011 bottle, Darkness Day 2012. Thick black pour with creamy tan head, aroma brought notes of dark chocolate, roast, coffee, nice vanilla, slight oak, bourbon, spice notes from the whiskey, slight toffee, caramel as well in there. Taste is roast, chocolate, sweet vanilla, caramel, bourbon, slight spice, yeast notes, slight oaky tones, hints of a slight dark fruit, finishing sweet, slightly bitter.

We did a taste testing of five different 50-50 2012 stouts. For the base stout, itís quite frankly superb. Pours black, with a beautiful yellowish-white froth. Some coffee notes, little bitterness, but the predominating flavor is roasted malt. Of the five, this and two others were in my second tier. Quite good, mind you, but very bourbony in flavor. If you enjoy a bourbon-infused stout, you canít go wrong with this. The Elijah had a late punch, lingering in bourbon flavor after the initial stout taste.

Sample from 2011 and 2012 vintages at the 5th Annual Coldest Day of the Year Stout Tasting on 01/26/2013: Pours dark brown with a medium thin beige head that diminishes steadily to a film. Patchy lacing on the glass. Aroma of bourbon, vanilla and chocolate. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky vanilla, bourbon and dark chocolate. The finish is burnt malt and bourbon. Good overall.

Very sweet, oaky aroma with some booze. Pours dark brown with basically no head. Very oaky flavor with whiskey and strong booze finish. Excellent! ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

Hard not to love everything about this beer. Seriously, this brewery has mastered the art of whiskey-aged stouts. Aroma and taste both have tons of cherry cordial, toffee, dark chocolate, and molasses. Thick and sweet and hard to get out of your mouth. I want to live next door to this brewery!

2012 bottling Pours a solid black with a decent sized tan head that slowly dissipates. The aroma coming out of my glass is roasty, chocolate, caramel and coffee wrapped in a subtle but evident barrel treatment of vanilla, and sweet bourbon whiskey. The flavor starts off sweet and malty with lots of roast, brown sugar, and chocolate. The barrel notes rush in with vanilla, whiskey, light wood to remind us that this is no ordinary stout. Lingering roasty whiskey with a touch of ethanol burn lasts long after every sip. Thick body with a light level of carbonation and a sweet almost syrupy creamy mouthfeel. Nice stout, the bourbon adds a nice sweetness that really compliments this version.

From bottle at Pangea Two Brews. This is the first bourbon beer Iíve had where I felt the bourbon was working with the beer. Aroma is chocolate and marshmallow.

Draft. Black/brown beer with a low cream head. Bourbon aroma. Bourbon and light chocolate flavor with light vanilla. Medium-plus bodied. Bourbon and light chocolate lingers with light roastiness. Well put together.

Bottle on 12/31/12 Mini Horizontal tasting with Eclipse Imperial Stout Elijah Craig 12 yr (this beer) and Mellow Corn. This one was better. Incredible depth and some fantastic bourbon notes. Great beer.

Appearance was jet black with tiny tannish creamy diminishing head, no lace. Aromas are whiskey, oak, hints of coffee, vinailla and alcohol. Taste was dominated by oaky whiskey, hints of coffee, cocoa, roasted malts, way to much heat. Palate was soft smooth CO2 with medium-full body, then lasting alcoholic smooth finish. To much heat now, aging will smooth out.
