Catchup from the past. Bomber from the Co-Op in Davis, CA. Purple wax. Bottle No. 106. Year 2009. Pours very black with a 1 finger tan head. Strong aromas of oak and vanilla. More than full bodied with rather mild carbonation. The flavor is very smooth burnt malt, with treacle, vanilla and oak. Compares very favorably with Paradox. It develops complexity, and shows a little heat. Very, very good. Worth the cost? You only live once. And the aroma continuously tantalizes, and the taste ditto. Try to try it.

I drank this originally from a tasting glass at NotB then re-reviewed and scored off a bottle from Nate on 3/20/2011... The beer pours a super dark black, hardly any head though. Poor lacing... The aroma is great, chocolate brownies, vanilla, bourbon finish. Not decadent or overstated, very restrained. Outstanding... The taste is superbly balanced, tastes great, and easily crushable. Fudge brownies, vanilla, light bourbon, a nice warm alcohol sensation in the middle, and the finish has some nice roasted coffee notes. The full spectrum is displayed and perfectly integrated. I had the PVW last weekend I think I almost prefer this, would love to do a side-by-side comparison. I originally rated this a 4.6, this time its deservedly higher.

11/26/10. 2009 elijah craig #147. dark. almost black with a soft tan head. milk chocolate aroma... bits of creamy, brown sugar, ash, spice, roast, vanilla and mellow bourbon exist as well. the flavor is very rich and the bourbon doesn’t over power everything. aftertaste is chocolate-y bourbon goodness. medium to full body, creamy texture and all around impressive. 8.5/4/8.5/5/17

UPDATED: MAR 1, 2013 As part of a Eclipse Vertical (PPW, 09 HH, 10 HH, EC, FR, CB, & EV) [pre-2011 releases]. Review for the 2009 Version: A: Deep black brown body with just a thin khaki head. S: Assertive, but refined bourbon notes of vanilla, oak and booze. T: Like the nose this had assertive, but balance and refined bourbon. As a result you really could explore the bourbon notes that augmented the solid malty base of caramel, roast, and a little chocolate. M: Nice carbonation provides a little tingle on the tongue when combined with just a smidgen of bourbon heat. O: A very nice bourbon barrel stout that hangs with all the big boys. It was a toss up for me between this and PPW for best of show. The other tasters put this a clear consensus #2.

2010 bottle from Elijah Craig barrels, brought by Tom to the Black Sunday BA Tasting in Houston. Pours black with a brown head. Nose is of bourbon, of course. Taste is of bourbon and chocolate. Mouthfeel is medium and tongue-coating with alcohol noticeable. Good stuff, but not fantastic.

22oz bottle shared by Sean, ’09 EC version. Rating #131. Dark cola colored almost black with very little head. Light bourbon, vanilla and a bit of wood in the nose, very nice. A little boozy, hot in the back of the throat, bourbon and vanilla, nice sweetness, real tasty. (1478)

Elijah Craig bottle shared by MrPickles...thanks Andy! - Tasted this blind, and was really surprised by the reveal. I loved the Heaven Hill version, and figured I’d love this one, too. Pours dark cola with barely a head. Nose is tons of sharp alcohol. I’d expect it to be a bit hot, but the booze is so overpowering that I can’t smell much else. It’s sweet though--lots of caramel and vanilla, but even that’s hard to discern beneath all that sharp alcohol. The taste is roughly the same, though a little less hot. None of the flavors seem to be very well integrated--as if a shot of liquor was dumped in an imperial stout. It’s even thinner and more watery than I’d expect. Overall, this beer took me by total surprise, in a bad way.
