4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Vanilla in the nose. Raisin. molasses and cream with a nice sweetness to it. Bourbon notes are wonderful in this and are balanced very well. Loved the chocolate nuances that crept in the finish.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle shared by STL crew. Pour is black like the others with thin tan head. Aroma and flavor are light chocolate malt, light roasted malt, faint brown sugar, and lightly sweet with notes of molasses and sweet toffee malt in the finish. Faint EtOH at the end, but light and overshadowed by the sweet malt. I liked this one a lot.

3.7 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
From notes. First reviewed 2/23/2011. Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a tasting glass.
This pours a dark brown with walnut edges. A small brown head forms initially but fades rather quickly and leaves no lace.
The delicious aroma of Elijah Craig hits me first, with molasses, vanilla, and oak coming next. Chocolate and a bit of coffee add to the wonderful aroma.
The EC takes a minute to really hit my taste buds. Dark roasted malt blends well with a decadent dark chocolate and a bit of coffee flavor. Then a vanilla and molasses sweetness introduce the bourbon flavor. A bit of woody oak, a touch of smoke, and then the finish is lightly sweet and more bourbon. Delicious.
This is full bodied with an appropriate level of carbonation. Somewhat creamy, but also a bit dry. Bourbon has the typical warming effect.
Getting to try this was a treat. The beer performed as well, meeting my expectations. Another success for barrel aged stouts.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Very similar to the 18 but just not as much depth/taste. Still has some vanilla and oak but just doesnít live up to its bigger brother. Loved the viscosity and the sweetness. Nose is also roast, vanilla, char, bourbon. Very nice brew and definitely worth seeking out.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
2009 650 ml bottle generously shared by colonelforbin. Thanks Mike. Pours a black that is cola brown at the edges when help up to the light. A small tan head has good retention and leaves a decent amount of lacing on the glass. The aroma is soft oak, some bourbon, marshmallow, vanilla, honey, caramel, some cherry, and some light alcohol. Initial taste has some sweetness with marshmallow, oak, bourbon, and some light roast. Then some hints of plum and cherry. Finish has a light bitterness and leaves a bit of lingering bourbon flavor. Quite smooth overall. Like the other versions of Eclipse this has a light mouthfeel, although this version has a bit of creaminess. Low carbonation. Overall, this is a great beer.

4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Big thanks to Tanger for opening his newly purchased bottle for us to try. I have been wanting to try this one for awhile now.
A - Pours jet black with a nice one finger tall off-white head leaving light lace down the glass.
S - Smells of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, coffee, and oak. The alcohol is fairly prevalent initially but it mellows out and some of the other aromas come out. It will be interesting to see how this develops in the bottle.
T - Starts off with a quick jolt of vanilla and chocolatey sweetness that quickly gets enveloped by the warming bourbon. Once the booze dies down it leave the pallet dry with oak tannins, lingering on the pallet for some time. This one is a joy to drink, altho I think it may even get better in the bottle.
M - Heavy body and flavor with moderately low carbonation. Smooth, silky feel that clings to the pallet. Alcohol is present but doesnít really get in the way.
O - One of the best Eclipsesí I have had to date. The balance of base to barrel was nearly flawless and the booze never got to the point of being overpowering. Glad I finally got to try this one as it really lived up to my expectations.

4.5 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
2011 Vintage, poured from a bottle into a CBS snifter.
A. Pours a pitch black color with a very slight red hue, a 1mm head that quickly resides to light bubbles.
S. Smells very sweet, somewhat of port wine, light chocolate and whiskey.
T. Tastes of chocolate, port wine flavors coming through and some mild and well blended whiskey.
M. Medium-heavy body, tingle and a wine-style dryness, with high carbonation.
O. This is an amazingly good beer. Very smooth and well bodied. Not very hot at all given this has not been aged at all. Lots of bold flavors. A beer everyone should attempt to have at some point!

3.1 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Poured into a snifter. 2011 vintage, bottle #3609. Purple wax, so I have the right listing.
4.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of creamy tan head. Retention is good and glass covering lacing is left behind.
3.5 S: Compared to the BT blend, this is surprisingly mellow. Thereís less of everything. Less chocolate from the base beer, less bourbon, less intensity overall. Like the BT, the barrel aging is very good. No hints of astringency or off-flavors. Also, the booze is incredibly well hidden. The bourbon itself is leathery, lightly earthy, and superbly smooth. Less vanilla and oak in this one. Overall this is about as well put together as it can get, but itís lacking any sort of intensity or complexity.
3.5 T: The taste follows the nose in that this is super mellow, but not as impressive as it could be. There isnít much going on from the base beer except for a light chocolate and roastiness. Rather, this is just a showcase for the bourbon. Unfortunately, the bourbon isnít strong enough for this to be much of a success. Leathery with melon fruitiness, a light earthiness, and a mild booze. A lot more well rounded that the BT blend, but also not as potent. Thus, it ends up with the same score.
3.0 M: Medium body. Maybe a touch heavier than the BT blend. This could use a touch more carbonation, but itís within the acceptable range. Also lacking with creaminess.
3.5 D: This beer (and I assume the rest of what Iíll drink) suffers from the same problems as the previous variants Iíve had. Great barrel aging, but they started with a less than impressive stout. Put a little more effort in there, and this would be a gangbusters horizontal. As an aside, EC must be some good stuff since it came off so mellow, well rounded, and complete in this beer. I might have to pick up a bottle.
