Bottle… Pours clear and nearly black with a small, creamy, beige head. Decent retention. The bouquet offers bourbon-soaked fudge, vanilla, vinous dark sherry and a touch of coconut. Full-bodied with a skim-milk mouthfeel and zippy carbonation. The flavor is a swirl of fudge, sweet tawny port, bitter black malt and hops flanked by charcoal. Finishes singed and bittersweet – more bitter than sweet. Kudos to richiesd for providing this bottle!

2011 bottle, # 3022. Pours dark black with some dark brown through direct light, and a clingy tan head. More head than the copper wax. Nose is heavy earthy. woody, cacaoey, with a lot of spirity notes. Tastes pretty rich, very oaky, earthy, malty, with big notes of charred patent malt, raisins and figs, blackberry, and port. A bit more spirity and hot than the copper. Some late hop notes and a taste reminiscent of the scotch barrel beer from Brew Dog.

2011 bottle. Pitch black pour with thin creamy head, quickly receding, fine sudsy lacing. Nose dominated by rich caramel vanilla bourbon, more traditional flavors of milk chocolate, roast coffee come out as the beer warms. Taste again has strong vanilla toffee, overarching bourbon characteristics, chocolate, mild roast in the finish with some heat. Could do with slightly less sweetness to help everything meld together. Silky smooth palate, almost creamy. Pretty nice, manages to avoid overdoing it with booziness which has turned me off with past bottles of this series.

Very smooth. Pours a black color. Medium aroma. Quite viscous. Not quite as spicy as the Four Roses but a touch better than the Rittenhouse. Well balanced. Not hot at all.

Had many of the eclipse series together. This is the 09 vintage. Pour is dark black liquid with a dark tan head. The nose has hints of bourbon, a bit of wood, lightly smoked with dry chocolate and some malt sweetness. The flavor is bourbon up front, lots of wood, notes of dry chocolate with a fair bit of rich cake and some additional fruity malt sweetness in back. Fully bodied, smooth and creamy, semi dry. One of the best in the tasting of the eclipse beers, rich and balanced with good integration.

Eclipse may be THE nectar of the Gods. I’ve had all of the 2011 varieties at this point, and all of them are equally amazing. This one might be my favorite. Lots of very woody, caramely whiskey notes and of course the typical stout chocolate and vanilla creamy wallop. I love this beer so much it hurts. Every Eclipse gets a 5.0. They’re all perfect in their own way. And, in my opinion, they are the best stouts on earth.
