UPDATED: OCT 19, 2014 Bottle bought through Systembolaget. Pours reddish black with a frothy blackish beige head that leaves a small trace on the glass while dissipating. Smell is slightly sweet and malty with roasted malts, high quality dark chocolate, vanilla fudge, charred wood, sweetened dark roast coffee, soy sauce, dark roast coffee, liquorice fudge and hints if nose tingling alcohol. Taste is sweet, bitter and malty with heavily roasted malts, charred wood, vanilla fudge, toffee, moist soil, vanilla hard candy, shredded coconut, roasted hazelnuts, dark roast coffee, liquorice fudge, toffee and hints of alcohol. Mouthfeel is soft, velvety, round, tiny roasted astringent and near full bodied. Finish is slightly sweet, bitter and malty with roasted malts, vanilla fudge, bourbon, soil, shredded coconut, burnt caramel, toffee, charred wood, liquorice fudge and hints of alcohol. Balanced and very tasty...

4.6 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Un brownies liquide avec un glaçage ŕ la vanille et des notes de petits fruits. Le corps soyeux et velouté des eclipse y est encore une fois.

6 Blind tasting at Papsoe 27-03-2010:
Bottle. Small off-white head that mostly diminished. Spare display of lacework. Dark color with a light reddish glow. Aroma of mild roasted malt, dried fruity, light grainy and dusty feel. Over the palate came heavy thick feel of liquorish, molasses, vanilla, Bourbon. Full bodied with a soft carbonation and alcoholic thick texture. Heavy sweet and some bitterness to counter. Lingering warming Bourbon liquorish finish.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
UPDATED: MAR 1, 2013 As part of a Eclipse Vertical (PPW, 09 HH, 10 HH, EC, FR, CB, & EV) [pre-2011 releases]. Review for the 2009 Version:
A: Deep black brown body with just a thin khaki head.
S: Assertive, but refined bourbon notes of vanilla, oak and booze.
T: Like the nose this had assertive, but balance and refined bourbon. As a result you really could explore the bourbon notes that augmented the solid malty base of caramel, roast, and a little chocolate.
M: Nice carbonation provides a little tingle on the tongue when combined with just a smidgen of bourbon heat.
O: A very nice bourbon barrel stout that hangs with all the big boys. It was a toss up for me between this and PPW for best of show. The other tasters put this a clear consensus #2.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle thanks to Sandstone, rated about a year ago before this beer had its own listing.
Pours jet black with a nicely formed small tan head and a little lacing. Looks a bit better than the tap version.
Aroma is really great, with vanilla, whiskey, sweet rich chocolate, and roastiness.
Flavor is also excellent. You have your typical imperial stout flavors - roast, chocolate, and mild coffee - all really intense and in your face, then you’ve got your -bal aged flavors - vanilla, oak, and whiskey. Mild hop bitterness as well that I didn’t get as much of on tap. All this melds really well together, with just some mild tannins to keep it from a perfect 5.
Fairly full and smooth on the palate with low carbonation and just a slight hint of booziness.
Drinkability is pretty good, and overall, this is really a great beer. Get it if you can. I recommend sending me a bottle of Midnight Sun M in exchange for this.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
jet black, thin large-bubbled head is coaxed with a vigorous pour but remains. Nose at first shows a dusty, oxidized malt, some unsweet bourbon, and a light soy. Reminds of aged 7000 without as much of the robust malt. Flavor is hotter up front, a thin but delicate body reminds of a nice rum-candy with warmth on the mid-palate, with some wood and cocoa through the lengthy finish, dry finish. Body and malt profile are a bit washed out but also chewy and overly sweet, some unfermented sugars remaining amidst near-balance. Still, I personally find the light body and lack of strong malt to be a trend growing too common from stout experimenters like CCB, Bruery, and now 50-50. And yet there is a ton of bourbon in this, which I’ve hardly mentioned, and I think this is because the bourbon blends so well with the base beer flavors.
EC still very sweet but enough base beer qualities to merge with the barrel, again alcohol-laden candy aspects between the bourbon, vanilla, and ashy chocolate.
