T - Sweet chocolate and bit of caramel malts, smooth Bourbon, vanilla, oak, molasses, coffee, black licorice, bitter dark cocoa, raisin and other dark fruits, and some booze. On tap at Fobab 2010, Elijah Craig: Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is very sweet vanilla and cocoa, still plenty of bourbon and oaky notes, but less than the heaven hill version. Much sweet all around flavor and in aroma. Lots of milk chocolate and dark chocolate with the vanilla notes and some nuttiness. Medium to full body and a soft carbonation. Very good stuff.

At FWIBF, Black pour, tan head, Bourbon, sweet, Vanilla, chocolate on the nose. Flavor is similar with some creaminess. Good stuff!

Gerbeer (1489) - Vancouver, British Columbia, CANADA - MAR 6, 2014
UPDATED: MAR 15, 2014 22 oz bottle. 2012 vintage. Pours black with light to moderate tan head. Aromas of rich dark roasted malts, pumpernickel/oatmeal, and alcohol. Flavors are similar with notes of toasted coconut and licorice. Big, full, and boozy. Very good but over priced - at least double that of equally good or better barrel aged Imperials.

Poured into a snifter. 2011 vintage, bottle #3609. Purple wax, so I have the right listing. 4.5 A: Black color. Two fingers of creamy tan head. Retention is good and glass covering lacing is left behind. 3.5 S: Compared to the BT blend, this is surprisingly mellow. Thereís less of everything. Less chocolate from the base beer, less bourbon, less intensity overall. Like the BT, the barrel aging is very good. No hints of astringency or off-flavors. Also, the booze is incredibly well hidden. The bourbon itself is leathery, lightly earthy, and superbly smooth. Less vanilla and oak in this one. Overall this is about as well put together as it can get, but itís lacking any sort of intensity or complexity. 3.5 T: The taste follows the nose in that this is super mellow, but not as impressive as it could be. There isnít much going on from the base beer except for a light chocolate and roastiness. Rather, this is just a showcase for the bourbon. Unfortunately, the bourbon isnít strong enough for this to be much of a success. Leathery with melon fruitiness, a light earthiness, and a mild booze. A lot more well rounded that the BT blend, but also not as potent. Thus, it ends up with the same score. 3.0 M: Medium body. Maybe a touch heavier than the BT blend. This could use a touch more carbonation, but itís within the acceptable range. Also lacking with creaminess. 3.5 D: This beer (and I assume the rest of what Iíll drink) suffers from the same problems as the previous variants Iíve had. Great barrel aging, but they started with a less than impressive stout. Put a little more effort in there, and this would be a gangbusters horizontal. As an aside, EC must be some good stuff since it came off so mellow, well rounded, and complete in this beer. I might have to pick up a bottle. Serving type: bottle Reviewed on: 01-21-2012 00:54:35

Pour thanks to dak! Bottle pours deep brown/black with a thin tan head. Aroma shows notes of bourbon, chocolate, and coconut. Flavor shows the same with addtional molasses and vanilla. Overall body is full and viscous. Had this side by side with the Heaven Hill version which showed very similar with underlying notes of rye. Both beers great in their own way.

Run 2, 2013 Pours black with some light oat etching. Smells of cola, pepper, some flour, some toasted malts, leather a bit of vanilla and thatís it. Flavor is smoke, oak, alcohol, dates, leather, maduro tobacco. Medium on full bodied with moderately low carb and a semi dry finish. Well, good to try, nothing to loose sleep over.

Bottle at Eulogy. BR 1 2012. Purple wax. Opaque pour with some small brown foam. Bottom of the glass shows a clear honey brown. Room temperature. Heady bourbon fumes off the top. Great stuff! Big dark notes very well blended with age. Liquorice. Black cherry cordial. Raisins. Prunes. Cigars. Burnt marshmallows. Lots of barrel notes. Body reads a bit thinner than expected. Flavors are very smooth though the high alcohol is not hidden - feels much higher than the 9.5% ABV on the label.

Bottle, 2009 Purple Wax version. Black pour, no head. Aroma is wood, vanilla, toffee, chocolate and roasted malt, and alcohol. Flavor is actually very sweet up front, with some chocolate, some bitter roasted malt, light peppery alcohol, and vanilla / oak. Pretty balanced and flavorful.
