3.8 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
22 oz. bottle. Pours dark brown/black with a small tan head. Nose is chocolate, bourbon, roast, oak, vanilla and dark fruits. Flavors are the same. This was consumed side by side with the 18/20 yr. version. This was not quite as smooth and showed more woody qualities. Still good, but not as good as the 18/20 year.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Split a 22oz bottle of the 2012 or 2011 (Purple?) vintage three ways. This poured a dark black color, with a dark tan head. Aroma was sweet and roasted notes - barrel, booze. Bourbon character, vanilla, some barrel in there. Very nice, subtle, subdued flavors, very smooth drinking - vanilla, chocolates, no harsh notes around the edges here.

22oz bottle, 2009 #880 generously shared by footbalm, thanks again
Appearance: Pours coal black with a small tan head with very little lacing, but some legs left on the glass after a good swirl to get more of that great aroma
Aroma: Dark malts, bourbon and oak
Taste: Smooth and silky mouthfeel. Dark malts and fruits, oak, grainy and chocolate
Very good and smooth drinking

4.3 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle generously shared by a BA at the Rapture release. Poured a pitch black body under a brown long lasting head. Aroma of coconut, vanilla, bourbon, oak, charcoal and chocolate cake. Fuller syrupy body with a touch of obvious heat. Flavor of chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, oak, tobacco, tar. Good good stuff.

4.1 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bomber to snifter. Looks good; a murky dark brown with thin beige lacing. Smells and tastes nice; sweet, malty, and boozy with a nice, smooth mouthfeel. Good beer!

4.6 AROMA 10/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 19/20
I drank this originally from a tasting glass at NotB then re-reviewed and scored off a bottle from Nate on 3/20/2011... The beer pours a super dark black, hardly any head though. Poor lacing... The aroma is great, chocolate brownies, vanilla, bourbon finish. Not decadent or overstated, very restrained. Outstanding... The taste is superbly balanced, tastes great, and easily crushable. Fudge brownies, vanilla, light bourbon, a nice warm alcohol sensation in the middle, and the finish has some nice roasted coffee notes. The full spectrum is displayed and perfectly integrated. I had the PVW last weekend I think I almost prefer this, would love to do a side-by-side comparison.
I originally rated this a 4.6, this time its deservedly higher.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle @ THE Eclipse Tasting. Purple waxed bottle #182. Cheers, Bruce! The pourís deep oily brown with hardly any trace of head whatsoever. The nose is sweet vanilla, plenty of wood, big bourbon and butterscotch candy. Light rum raisin cake and chocolate syrup. The taste is more light sweet chocolate, cocoa powder. Thereís further accents of earthy roasted malts, toasted coconut. Some smooth, sweet marshmallow fluff and raisin bread. The bodyís oily and very smooth. The alcoholís hidden well. Overall, a pretty excellent imperial stout. The bourbon comes through on the nose more than the taste.

4.2 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Tap at FoBAB 8. This is the Elijah Craig version. Same appearance. Nose is much nicer. Perfumey bourbon, vanilla and toast. Chocolate and anise peak through. On taste, well integrated bourbon notes prevent it from being a bourbon bomb. Nice spicy oak notes as well. Probably my second favorite of the lot. 9-5-8-4-16 (4.2)

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle thanks to Sandstone, rated about a year ago before this beer had its own listing.
Pours jet black with a nicely formed small tan head and a little lacing. Looks a bit better than the tap version.
Aroma is really great, with vanilla, whiskey, sweet rich chocolate, and roastiness.
Flavor is also excellent. You have your typical imperial stout flavors - roast, chocolate, and mild coffee - all really intense and in your face, then youíve got your -bal aged flavors - vanilla, oak, and whiskey. Mild hop bitterness as well that I didnít get as much of on tap. All this melds really well together, with just some mild tannins to keep it from a perfect 5.
Fairly full and smooth on the palate with low carbonation and just a slight hint of booziness.
Drinkability is pretty good, and overall, this is really a great beer. Get it if you can. I recommend sending me a bottle of Midnight Sun M in exchange for this.
