UPDATED: FEB 27, 2012 Elijah Craig, 2009 Vintage: Pours a deep, inky opaque black with a small brown head. Notes of rich bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts, chocolate, oak, and molasses. Nose is a little hot, but the flavor and mouthfeel are damn near perfect; smooth and rich without being too bourbony. Full-bodied, with low carbonation. This is my favorite of the four here today. 8 5 9 5 17 - 4.4. Re-Rate, 2011 vintage, purple wax. 22 oz. bottle. Pours a cloudy but bright mahogany with a small tan film. Warm aroma, with molasses, oak, toffee, and vanilla. The flavor has tobacco, vanilla, caramel, molasses, oak, brown sugar, and bourbon. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Not as good as the vintage I had at FOBAB. Was tied as my third favorite of the 2011 series. 8 4 8 4 16 - 4.0.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2011 (Pour from dak!) Elijah version. Pours near black with minimal head. Aroma is bourbony goodness. Chocolate. Taste is sweet-almost candylike inspite of the bourbon. Full bodied with creamy/slick texture. Really nice Pappy version-courtesy of dionysus at RBWG 2011-Phoenix. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma has beautiful bourbon aroma which is understated, if that’s possible. Sweet malt and bourbon flavors with a little heat. Full bodied and creamy texture. Finish is all bourbon. This is a good beer, but other concurred that GI Rare was a bit better. AP: 4/5 Ar: 9/10 T: 8/10 P:3/5 O:17/20

On tap at Fobab 2010, Elijah Craig: Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is very sweet vanilla and cocoa, still plenty of bourbon and oaky notes, but less than the heaven hill version. Much sweet all around flavor and in aroma. Lots of milk chocolate and dark chocolate with the vanilla notes and some nuttiness. Medium to full body and a soft carbonation. Very good stuff.

Pour thanks to dak! Bottle pours deep brown/black with a thin tan head. Aroma shows notes of bourbon, chocolate, and coconut. Flavor shows the same with addtional molasses and vanilla. Overall body is full and viscous. Had this side by side with the Heaven Hill version which showed very similar with underlying notes of rye. Both beers great in their own way.

Bottle, 2009 Purple Wax version. Black pour, no head. Aroma is wood, vanilla, toffee, chocolate and roasted malt, and alcohol. Flavor is actually very sweet up front, with some chocolate, some bitter roasted malt, light peppery alcohol, and vanilla / oak. Pretty balanced and flavorful.

Elijah Craig version, sampled side by side with the Heaven Hill Rye version, both thanks to Dak! Dark brown pour with a creamy head. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon, coffee, dark fruit and vanilla. Flavor is much the same. Roasty and delicious!

Tap at FoBAB 8. This is the Elijah Craig version. Same appearance. Nose is much nicer. Perfumey bourbon, vanilla and toast. Chocolate and anise peak through. On taste, well integrated bourbon notes prevent it from being a bourbon bomb. Nice spicy oak notes as well. Probably my second favorite of the lot. 9-5-8-4-16 (4.2)

A: The pour is viscous and black with a finger of tan colored head forming. S: Smells like bourbon--delicious, delicious, bourbon. Lots of vanilla and chocolate making the nose a thing of decadence. Smooth roasted malts along with a nice oak aroma. Some toffee and caramel provide additional sweetness. T: Intense vanilla, bourbon, and chocolate on the tongue provides an excellent drinking experience. Great roasted malts along with a really creamy caramel flavor. M: The body is medium to full and is silky on the tongue. The carbonation is there but stays out of the way, providing a really smooth mouthfeel. D: As much as I don’t want to hype these beers up, they are just so damn good. Probably my favorite series of imperial stouts. I will definitely be doing my utmost to go to the next release party.

22oz, purple waxed bottle. 2011 Vintage, bottle # 3251. Poured a black color, with brown edges and a smaller sized tan head. Aromas of wood, earth, vanilla, and bourbon. Tastes of bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, vanilla creme, lighter roast, and caramel. Alcohol overall well hidden.

UPDATED: APR 29, 2010 Waxed bomber, courtesy of kiefdog, pours deep dark brown with almost no head. The aroma is a bit mild with notes of caramel, molasses, fairly strong levels of bourbony booze, some oak, dark roastiness and some chocolate. The taste is rich thick smooth velvety YUM with sweetness running from molasses to caramel to malts. The barrel notes do a good job cover up most of the base beer goodnesss. I get firm assertive bourbon and a bit of oak from midway and into the finish. Less barrel time would have been nice.
