UPDATED: SEP 18, 2014 Darkest brown and border of ruby highlight. Big fading tan swirlable head. Sweet marshmallow vanilla bourbon. Neat initial gleam of booze but an exhaust fumed wood and naturally creamy rise. Soft and almost cooling milky. Finish is a sweet soy and light bourbon burn. It hides a colourful barrel incredibly well, not busy or escalator layered. Just tremendous. Thanks Paul for the bottle, via a bloody beer club. ’Merica.

Woodshop! Black pour. Chocolate, molasses, bourbon, oak, vanilla and toffee nose. Flavor is much the same. I love how this brewery melds the barrel with a wondeful beer. Delicious!

Black with a medium beige head. Sweet aroma with burned malt, dark chocolate, espresso and bourbon. Sweet flavour with burned malt, dark chocolate, vanilla, espresso, bourbon and wood. Finished sweet with warming alcohol. Full bodied. Nice one.

Purple wax bomber (No. 991, 2009) shared at Hamilton’s Tavern: Blackest black and topped with larger frothy bubbles on the pour, but the head dissipates nearly immediately. An intriguing, sweet aroma filled with oak, campfire smoke, roasted malts, bittersweet dark chocolate, espresso, raw dough balls toasted on the outside, red fruity esters, vanilla, and plum. Flavors include sweet malts- entirely balanced by bitter chocolate, pulpy fruit, smoked thick oak, vinous tannin qualities, vanilla and somewhat of a lactic finish and aftertaste. Full-boded, softly carbonated, and exceptionally smooth feel throughout, which is reinforced by a fair amount of accompanying, alcoholic heat. Drinkability: Pure and unexpected characteristics makes this brew a first-rate knockout. Pairing: Roasted lapin over asparagus. Rebuy: Yes. #450 on 16052010, DG.

UPDATED: FEB 27, 2012 Elijah Craig, 2009 Vintage: Pours a deep, inky opaque black with a small brown head. Notes of rich bourbon, vanilla, roasted malts, chocolate, oak, and molasses. Nose is a little hot, but the flavor and mouthfeel are damn near perfect; smooth and rich without being too bourbony. Full-bodied, with low carbonation. This is my favorite of the four here today. 8 5 9 5 17 - 4.4. Re-Rate, 2011 vintage, purple wax. 22 oz. bottle. Pours a cloudy but bright mahogany with a small tan film. Warm aroma, with molasses, oak, toffee, and vanilla. The flavor has tobacco, vanilla, caramel, molasses, oak, brown sugar, and bourbon. Medium-bodied, with low carbonation and a sticky mouthfeel. Not as good as the vintage I had at FOBAB. Was tied as my third favorite of the 2011 series. 8 4 8 4 16 - 4.0.

UPDATED: MAR 21, 2011 (Pour from dak!) Elijah version. Pours near black with minimal head. Aroma is bourbony goodness. Chocolate. Taste is sweet-almost candylike inspite of the bourbon. Full bodied with creamy/slick texture. Really nice Pappy version-courtesy of dionysus at RBWG 2011-Phoenix. Pours dark brown with tan head. Aroma has beautiful bourbon aroma which is understated, if that’s possible. Sweet malt and bourbon flavors with a little heat. Full bodied and creamy texture. Finish is all bourbon. This is a good beer, but other concurred that GI Rare was a bit better. AP: 4/5 Ar: 9/10 T: 8/10 P:3/5 O:17/20

On tap at Fobab 2010, Elijah Craig: Pours black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is very sweet vanilla and cocoa, still plenty of bourbon and oaky notes, but less than the heaven hill version. Much sweet all around flavor and in aroma. Lots of milk chocolate and dark chocolate with the vanilla notes and some nuttiness. Medium to full body and a soft carbonation. Very good stuff.

Pour thanks to dak! Bottle pours deep brown/black with a thin tan head. Aroma shows notes of bourbon, chocolate, and coconut. Flavor shows the same with addtional molasses and vanilla. Overall body is full and viscous. Had this side by side with the Heaven Hill version which showed very similar with underlying notes of rye. Both beers great in their own way.

Bottle, 2009 Purple Wax version. Black pour, no head. Aroma is wood, vanilla, toffee, chocolate and roasted malt, and alcohol. Flavor is actually very sweet up front, with some chocolate, some bitter roasted malt, light peppery alcohol, and vanilla / oak. Pretty balanced and flavorful.

Elijah Craig version, sampled side by side with the Heaven Hill Rye version, both thanks to Dak! Dark brown pour with a creamy head. Aroma of roasted malt, bourbon, coffee, dark fruit and vanilla. Flavor is much the same. Roasty and delicious!
