Imperial Eclipse Stout aged in special release Elijah Craig 20 Year Bourbon Barrels

Note from the brewer: The white wax 2011 Eclipse was all 20 year. There was no such brand when we acquired barrels, so we called it 18 year. We have since found out that the 20 year old barrels were dumped for a 20yo Elijah Craig special bottling.

#1108, 2011. $30 for a bomber and I won’t be spending this much again, no matter how good this ends up being. Greedy greedy greedy. Black with a small tan head, low retention. Lots of roast in the nose, tinge of ash. There is also a good amount of oaky hot bourbon vanilla, some sweet caramel and chocolate, light vinous notes behind. Flavor wasn’t quite as hot or roasty as I thought it was going to be, and the chocolate notes are a good deal stronger, turning into a great dessert-like sweet bourbon chocolate beer that is (in my mind) how a barrel aged beer should be, a la Angel’s Share. When the booze blends with the rich sweet beer, it is decadent, and much better than with a big roasty dry beer. Did get richer and sweeter in aroma as it warmed. Semi-dry finish with bitterness at a 2-3, a bit roasty, but not burnt or ashy. Low carbonation with a big full body. Very good beer, but I feel it is only worth the price that it was a few years ago (at $15 or $18), not at $30. I can’t see this gaining anything from further aging.

Bottle @ toronado sd. $56. Right. Ok. Boozy but coherent nose mixing the stouty malts with the whiskey influence, smidgen of boozy heat beneath, but with enough refinement to allow the cookie and vanilla notes to shine. Dark brown pour with whispy thin darker tan head. Flavors bring it all together again...a lot of sweetness but yet enough booziness to counterbalance...cookie dough and vanilla are strong but complimenting the chocolaty undertones of the base stout. Everything here is nicely balanced, boozy in a good way. Its on the sweet side, yes...but I think the retained boozy qualities counterbalance the sweetness sufficiently. Much better than early releases as far as my memory is concerned. Quite nice indeed

Tasted on draft at FoBAB 2011. Pours opaque oily black with a thin tan head that leaves a thin ring of lace. The nose is dry dark chocolate, with coffee, roasted malt, coconut, and vanilla oak. The flavor is dry and nicely balanced with coconut, vanilla, darkly roasted coffee bean malt, and bitter dark chocolate. The body is full and creamy with light carbonation and a long coffee, dark chocolate, coconut, and vanilla whiskey finish.

2011 bomber bottle shared with 2 friends. Poured a dark Brown to black colour with a small tanned head on top. Nose has a lot of charred oak, vanilla, toffee and roasted malts. Campfire smoke, and not as much bourbon anymore as what used to be i think. Some fainted red fruits and a hint of plums and raisins. With Some subtle bourbon notes. Very complex and aged very Well. Very nice

Pours a dark brown with a beige/almost brown rim that leaves some lacing. Nose is of bourbon, vanilla, coffee and alcohol. Taste is on the sweeter side and offers chocolate, vanilla bean, bourbon and alcohol again. Body is full, carbonation soft and mouthfeel is rich and syrupy. Overall a good BA imperial stout, I can’t say I’ve been wow’ed by it but it was still really good.

Bottle purchased from El Cerrito, SoCal. Pours a thick dark brown almost black with a thick, foamy, light tan head. Aroma of boozy bourbon, dark fruit, chocolate and oak. Flavor is rich sweet chocolate, bitter roasted malt, hot bourbon and some caramel. Full body with mild carbonation and a velvety smooth mouth feel. Great beer, lots of bourbon character that is tempered with sweet chocolate. I would seek out more of this if it wasn’t so expensive.

Bottle 2012. Dark brown close to black with a minimal tan head. Molasses, bourbon, warming alcohol, vanilla, sweet chocolate. Medium body, sticky texture, near flat carbonation, medium/heavy sweet and medium bitter. More flat and sticky than the 12 year version. Nåe ringar end tållaaarn.

Opened at the 2013 end of year Ottawa tasting, 2011 bottle via Capones. Side by side with the 12yr EC - similar dark colour, not quite smooth as the 12 but nice amount of burnt malt, oak, vanilla and oak; found this one a little too buttery for my liking along with a little too sweet. Moderate+ body, mild carbonation, smooth, more chocolate and bourbon on the finish.
