COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Imperial Eclipse Stout aged in special release Elijah Craig 20 Year Bourbon Barrels

Note from the brewer: The white wax 2011 Eclipse was all 20 year. There was no such brand when we acquired barrels, so we called it 18 year. We have since found out that the 20 year old barrels were dumped for a 20yo Elijah Craig special bottling.

Vintages:
2011 Imperial Eclipse Stout (Elijah Craig 18/20 Year Barrel) = White Wax
2012 Imperial Eclipse Stout (Elijah Craig 20 Year Barrel) = White Wax

65cl, at 9.5%Vol, Vintage 2012 (with white wax), new exclusive American brew, with honey, from Mikkeller Webshop, very complex Stout, roasted/alcoholic/sweet and slightly woody/fruity, yet not too heavy, balanced, hazy, small head, very good Winter brew, yet very expensive!

22oz.bottle. Pours dark brown with a small bubbly tan head. The nose is roast, chocolate, bourbon, oak, vanilla, dark fruits and a splash of molasses with some boozy notes as well. The flavor is roasted, chocolate, bourbon, vanilla, dark fruits and molasses. Some light coffee notes. A touch hot and I would like to see a bit more body to support the flavors.

Bottle courtesy of Anthony. Hands down, beer of the night. Pours a deep black body with thick brown head and nice lacing. Aroma is sweet vanilla, light milk chocolate, soft oak, light molasses and syrup. Mouthfeel is creamy and divine with notes of sweet vanilla, oak, butter, bourbon, marshmallows, chocolate, and a touch of maple syrup. This was one of the creamiest, most indulgent stouts I can remember having in a very long time.

Bottle number 5348. Shared with Amyliz4 and served in a SAVOR wine glass. Pours near-black with a pretty good light mocha head and a surprisingly-large amount of lacing as it goes down. Thin cap recedes a bit quickly and makes way to a thin collar, which holds throughout. The nose brings bourbon first and foremost, but then has a good dosing of coconut and vanilla. Light oak character. Chocolate there as well. Flavor has good oak, coconut, and vanilla in addition to the bourbon. Subtle roast and chocolate in the background. Most everything seems to be coming from the barrel and I won’t complain one bit. Full body and chewy with just a bit of booze. Low-medium carbonation. Great complexity. Absolutely exceptional. Boom.

22oz. Bottle (2011 Vintage. Bottle # 5422.): Aroma of malt, Bourbon, light coconut, light vanilla, oak, barrel, char, roasting, and light chocolate. Poured pitch black in color with a medium to large-sized, cream, dense, brown head that diminished but lasted throughout. Opaque. Sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is light to medium sweet and lightly bitter. Tastes of malt, light Bourbon, light oak, barrel, light tar, roasting, char, light chocolate, light dark ripe fruit, vanilla, slight coconut, and a hint of cherry. Medium to full body. Smooth, slick, creamy, viscous texture. Soft carbonation. Malt, oak, Bourbon, roasting, slight tar, vanilla finish. 9.5%ABV is completely hidden throughout.

Bottle #2516 shared by a friend for rating #3,000. Darkest brown pour with a thin tan head. Aroma of bourbon, chocolate, vanilla, oak, dark fruit and honey. Chocolate and vanilla flavor up front, then some dark fruit and bourbon before a brandy-ish finish. Heat was very manageable, likely due to the 2 years spent in the barrel. Spectacular.

Bottle: Poured a pitch-black color stout with a large dark brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of bourbon and rich black chocolates is harsher than ion the 12 year version. Taste is also dominated rich black chocolate notes with some medium rye whiskey notes with rounds off the rough or bitter edge of the base stout but some of the harsher notes don’t really comes out clean. Body is full with nice oily and creamy texture with good carbonation with alcohol not that apparent in this version. I preferred the 12 year old Elijah version to this one base on overall taste being not as smooth as the other version.
