COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Imperial Eclipse Stout aged in special release Elijah Craig 20 Year Bourbon Barrels

Note from the brewer: The white wax 2011 Eclipse was all 20 year. There was no such brand when we acquired barrels, so we called it 18 year. We have since found out that the 20 year old barrels were dumped for a 20yo Elijah Craig special bottling.

Vintages:
2011 Imperial Eclipse Stout (Elijah Craig 18/20 Year Barrel) = White Wax
2012 Imperial Eclipse Stout (Elijah Craig 20 Year Barrel) = White Wax

Bottle shared at Bavarian Lodge with my new best friend in the whole world whatsisname. Even with soapy hands from the washroom, I can smell the tiny glass at arm’s length. HEAVY alcohol nose, with sides of licorice and brandy. Solid black color, what else. If there was ever a head in this beer pour, it tucked itself between its legs to kiss its butt goodbye. Taste is thick and fully malted out, like biting into a frozen Charleston Chew. Michael Rosenow says he finds prunes in it. I say prunes, raisins, maybe even some figs. Surprisingly, I did not consider the whiskey notes, perhaps I did not know this was a barrel-aged Eclipse. But I’m happy to find Todd has amped up his recipe since I last had it years ago at Flossmoor Station.

(FiftyFifty Imperial Eclipse Stout - Elijah Craig 20 Year Barrel) Bottle 650 ml at home, served into a snifter, ABV 9.5% printed on the bottle. White wax, marked BR1/2012 Black coloured body, small and a bit thin dark beige head on top, with average retention. Aroma has heavy bourbon, liquorice, soy sauce, alcohol. The taste has lots of bourbon too, wood, liquorice, plenty of alcohol, roasted malts on the finish, soy suace again, quite sweet all in all. Thick body, soft carbonation, very sticky on the palate. Pretty good.

Bottle from Systembolaget. Dark malty smell with oak, bourbon and toasted sugar. Similar taste, sweet. A bit boozy, like they added a shot of bourbon.

22, capped and waxed. Thanks, J! Wow, what an awesome unexpected treat. Pours an opaque matte black with a dense and creamy burnt tan head that goes away quickly. Big sweet nose, like milk and chocolate chip cookies except the milk is a wet bourbon barrel, so it adds apricots and vanilla. Creamy thick body, minimal carb but still present and dimensional. Chocolate chip cookies, apricot, and vanilla on the mid palate. Long sweet finish but not at all cloying.

Comparative tasting of 9 different Eclipse Stout variants. All beers small to rather good yellow-beige rim over jet-black beer Overpowering nose of Bourbon, vanilla, alcohol & esters, benzene, spirit, green grapes. Sweet Bourbon flaovur, Belgian chocolates, chocolatesweets. Serious alcoholwarming, sticky, full bodied, creamy MF. A tad sweet to my taste. Thanks to M & L for bringing this one along !
