Served in a FiftyFifty Eclipse snifter. Thanks, Dan! Loads and loads of whiskey and quite boozy. It’s all barrel. Not a fan at all. Slightly watered down Jack Daniels.

"i’ll admit that this one got off on the wrong foot. The previous two special barrel aged releases of this beer were $20 a pop. Almost twice as much as other incredible special release beers like Bourbon County, Abyss, Port BA Santas Little Helper...even more than some places charge for Rasputin 12. Apparently that wasn’t enough, as the 3rd barrel release of this beer was jacked up further...to $22.95. Really guys, not making enough of a profit there already?! So - since a couple buddies and I were already planning a tasting with all three versions of this beer (along with the accompanying bourbon/whiskey for each) we plunked down the cash for one. My buddy dropped his own coin for a second bottle, which we had yesterday. I had refused more than the one, especially since the brewer said they’d have at least two versions of the stout on tap when the JD was released, and they had a grand total of...ZERO! Why sell it draft for $6, when you’re gouging your customers for $23 a bottle, right? And to top it all off, they couldn’t find any chocolate sauce for my three-year-old’s chocolate milk? What the hell? They are back on double secret probation. They were starting to earn their way back into my good graces (after shit service - and I mean SHYTE) during all three visits there over the first two years they were open, they had seemed to be getting their act together, but the price hiking and lack of tap beer, especially when you promise it, really ticked me off. But...onto the beer. I should have known since it cost the most, it would be the weakest of the three, but I went into it open minded and hoped for a truly excellent beer. The previous two were. This was was...good to very good. JD is probably my least favorite spirit of the three, and the beer was overpowered by the whisky more than by the other two bourbons, so not quite enough of the stout came through. You got lots of chocolate, but lots of whisky sweetness and heat from the alcohol as well. it was quite tasty, but far less complex, and not quite as smooth as the other two. overall, a great example of a good beer that got too much hype and ain’t quite worth the pricetag."

3.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20
Bomber, 2009 vintage, waxed. Poured deep brown with a short-lived smoked tan head. The aroma picked up quite a bit of honey plus roasted black and cocoa malts.. the whiskey gave fairly bright accents that only sort of worked.. soft oak and a hit of peppery heat on the back of the nose. The flavor opened with sharp whiskey and tart barrel, with thin roasted black malts and dry honey following.. tart barrel and boozy notes swirled throughout.. finished with sharp barrel, medicinal notes, and boozy warmth. Medium-bodied, but thin at times on the palate.. moderate carbonation.. this just didn’t come together very well.

3.9 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 15/20
Thanks to Beer Savant for sharing 2009 and 2009-300 Day vintage bottles during his 50th birthday bash. The beer pours brownish-black with a medium foamy tan head that diminishes steadily to an outer ring. Strings of lacing. Bourbon, malt and chocolate in the nose. Full-bodied with flavors of oaky vanilla, bourbon and dark chocolate. The finish is subtle booze and dark chocolate. Pretty good overall.

4.4 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 10/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
Bottle labeled JD 300 2009 42. No wax. Very dark brown with a fizzy tan head. Caramel, vanilla, bourbon and dank oak barrel aroma. Creamy lightly oily palate. Very bourbon forward, which I like, tastes of caramel, raisin, chocolate, vanilla, fig, and of course strong but smoothed by age bourbon, and finishing with a honey and oak taste. Very good.

2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 4/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20
300 day version. 2009 vintage. No wax. Served in a FiftyFifty Eclipse snifter.
The beer appears pretty much the same as the other Eclipse stouts - dark, nearing black, with a small beige head. The aroma brings oak, booze, and an odd, buttery sweetness. The flavor is another step down from the questionable aroma. Buttery toffee, sweet booze, and just not on par with the usual quality one would expect from an Eclipse stout. Medium to full bodied with moderately low carbonation. My least favorite of the series. There were several ounces left in the bottle at the end of the tasting.
