Thanks to Beer Savant for sharing 2012 vintage bottle during his 50th birthday bash. Brown-black pour with a medium beige head that recedes quickly. Short strings of lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, booze and dark fruit. Full-bodied and smooth with flavors of roast malt, spicy whiskey and vanilla. The finish is slightly syrupy with a boozy vanilla aftertaste. Good treatment all around.

Bottle. Pours black with a rich wooden brown head that lasts throughout the beer. Aroma has a decent amount of boozy bourbon with strong roasted malts and a touch of coffee and honey sweetness. Flavor starts with strong roasted malts and is joined by bourbon in the finish supported by a hint of honey and apple.

3.6 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 14/20
3 ounce sample from a bottle at The Davis Beer Shoppe. The aroma has a good deal of sweet chocolate character, which is backed up by some roastiness. Not much else happening here, and I donít detect any barrel in the nose. Slightly transparent black body with a small, tan head present. Starts sweet with some chocolate sweetness before this becomes lightly vinous and astringent in the middle. Warming finish, with mild ethanol. I really donít detect much impact from the barrel. Iíd be pissed if I paid $30 for this. Iím smarter than that, though.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 18/20
The beer pours like thin oil or thick coffee. It sits in the glass a chocolaty black with a nice little scrim of bubbles that initially made a head above the beer. The head/scrim is a creamy yellow color with khaki hints and is made of nano bubbles that make a smooth and creamy appearance as they pack together. Lacing from the beer is slick, and the legs are light but definitely apparent on the glass. On the nose, this beer is all about the whiskey. Big, bristling and sweet alcohol rush the nose bringing hints of corn alcohol, and sticky corn syrup. This is a phenomenal whiskey-scented beer; it is fresh and snappy on the nose. Beneath the whiskey sits gentle caramel roast alongside tropical coconut, and some slight dark raisin notes. My girlfriend picks up hints of salted caramel as well. On the tongue, the beer tastes hot in alcohol with sticky sweetness coming from the malt and the whiskey mingling. The finish of the beer is dry however, leaving a light bite of acid in the mouth. In flavor, the beer begins as spicy alcohol with hints of coconut. The coconut eventually folds out on the tongue into sweet corn whiskey with touches of tannic oak that works to dry the cloying sweet whiskey flavor. Malt plays second fiddle in this beer, lacing a light caramel undertone to the beer and appearing as a mellow candied caramel in the aftertaste. The finish runs hot with cloying whiskey and a touch of coconut and tannic oak. In the mouth, the beer feels on the heavy side of medium in body with a very soft carbonation. The beer feels smooth and velvety, showing a little of the honey as it caresses the tongue. It bites a little on the tip of the tongue as the beer finishes, which cuts back on the softness of this beer, but it still is quite a soft beer. Overall, this is a hugely whiskey-heavy beer, but it tastes great because of it. My bottle was several months old but the whiskey was still hot as ever on the tongue, and provided a nicely complex flavor for me to ponder. It was a little too hot in alcohol for what I normally like in a barrel-aged stout, but it was still very good to sip on and very tasty. The beer was also gigantically pricey, but my girlfriend is amazing and bought it for me and I thank her greatly. A beer worthy of a try, though I donít think I will get it again; this is a great beer to split among friends.

4.2 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 5/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 17/20
22oz waxed bomber pours with a dark mahogany body supporting a mocha head of foam. The aroma offers up boozy heat flowing into sweet bourbon and light wood notes as well as some dark roasted malts and chocolate. The taste is smooth and fairly creamy delivering up dark roasted malts, some molasses, smooth sweet bourbon and the booziness. This is a dandy smooth rich sipper of a beer where the barrel aging didnít crush the wonderful base beer.

4.3 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
Poured this at a good temperature with an average sized light brown, foamy head that soon settled to a splotchy cover and ring with a bit of lace. Color is an opaque black brown. Aroma is molasses, malt, roast, vanilla and on the mild side. Flavorís like nose, sweet is dominant, backed with good carbonic tang and just right bitter, well balanced. Honey is in the background along with oak. Body/carbonation are perfect. Finish is just a tad warming, just like flavor, and tapers moderately. Easy drinking. Very good.
