COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
Once a year we brew a Barley Wine. Old Conundrum is heavily hopped with CTZ, Warrior, Centennial and Cascade. Brewed in the American Style with a West Coast influence. Enjoyable, warming and smooth. The hop character is young as of tapping 1/2010 but will fade in about 6 months to a year. Some will be laid down in 4 Roses Bourbon barrels.

Enjoyed at Beer Revolution in Oakland, CA. Pours reddish brown with a beige head. Fruity aroma with apples, plums, and other dark fruit. Pretty resinous. The flavor is herbal and fruity with a little caramel and a toasted, bitter, alcoholic finish. A solid American style barleywine.

draft... in a event with a bunch of barrel aged barleywines this is one that stood out, the hops show through the barrel and provide lots of balance

Medium brown with a fizzy white head. Sweet molasses aroma and taste with caramel notes and a mildly musty finish.

On tap at The Monk’s Kettle. Hop pellet aroma, heady and grassy and a bit of raw wort in there, too. Very hoppy nose, a bit odd for a barley wine. There is a hint of caramel sweetness, too. Dark coppery ruby-brown, clear, with foamy-creamy off-white lacing head. Medium heavy body, lightly oily and chewy, with medium carbonation and alcohol warming. Starts rather dry, with a light carbonic tang and neutral fruity hoppy character - light orange and grapefruit. Some alcohol sweetness, with raisin and dates, mild caramel, and a ton of hop bitterness. Finish is bitter with malty raisin sweetness, and a bitter dry after. Not too sticky, but the sugar is there.

Tap @ brewery. Mahogany body, clear, small tan head that becomes a ring and laces nicely until it vanishes. Aroma is dark fruits, hoppy-fruits, floral, pine, powerful butterscotch funk, yeasty like unbaked bread dough. Mouth is fullish with...almost fluffy carbonation, pretty nice but fades away by half-glass. Flavor is lightly sweet, fruits, butterscotch funk, yeasty like bread dough and leather, some roastiness, well-hopped with a piny finish. Interesting beer. Tasted pretty great cold, but deteriorated as it warmed. All in all pretty good.

My favourite barleywine. Slightly muddy, amber colour. Smells strongly of alcohol, but the flavour is subtle. Sweet, but not TOO sweet the way most barleywines are. Tastes and smells slightly of dried cherries. A little hoppy - just the right amount. I usually don’t like barleywines much, but this is already a favourite. Only tricky part is remembering it’s 9%, since the flavour is so delicious and gentle.
