Super hoppy aroma. Amber-brown with an off-white head. Hop-dominated, the bitterness that just lingers on the palate.

Tap at the brewery. Full disclosure: I’m not a fan of black IPAs. When I saw this on the board I got a little jazzed about FiftyFifty’s decision to try and make a tasty version of this very vogue but unperfected new style. Red caramel malts complement the IPA style much better than darker roasts. That said, I’ll still go for a Port Shark Bite when I want a big hoppy red ale. This beer (FiftyFifty ) is flavorful and tasty. The problem I have is the same I have with the black IPAs- - the flavors and tastes don’t belong together in the same glass. Well made and high quality but not my thing.

Tap...hazy, amber appearance w/offwhite head, tons of lace. Hoppy aroma of honey, pollen, some pine & citrus. Palate is Med/full, ample foamy Carb and a nicely balanced finish. Flavor if lightly sweet w/sugar, grapefruit rind, pine, flowers...a touch pungent. Fairly simple, but nice.

On tap at the brewpub. Pours reddish brown with a thin beige head and a strange dark malt aroma. There is a slightly sweet malt flavor with some serious hop bitterness. This is an interesting combination that works quite well.
