base beer for the Fiftyfifty IS series, on tap at The Blue Palm. Very dry. A small retained head on a very dark body. So-so drinkability as very roasty and a bit astringent. Roasty aroma. Thick lace.

Dark dark brown almost black, tan head. Chocolate, roasted malt, boozy, note of raisin, and a bit of burnt toast. A middle of the road stout, I think eclipse is a little overrated.

(on draught at FiftyFifty). I was told by Todd that this beer was designed specifically to handle the barrel-aging for the eclipse beers. It turns out that this will be bottled once some capacity issues are handled. And that’s a good thing. Pours near black with an espresso head. Aroma has chocolate, coffee and some caramel. Taste is sweet with lots of chocolate and some coffee. Medium bodied with an oily texture. Roasty, dry finish. I think this is a really wonderful imperial stout.

4oz sampler -

The waiter brought this as "just the regular stout". I thought it was funny that he chose those words...regular stout...as a description because it was nowhere near as tasty as the Eclips stout. Not bad, just kinda pedestrian. Aroma of toffee, alcohol, roasted malts and a touch of powdered chocolate. Flavor was strong with the alcohol, chocolate powder, roasted malts and a bit of coffee showing up. This is a kind of beer that can benefit from some age, but they serve it up fresh as a daisy.

Pours a dark black. Getting toffee and vanilla aromas. Very mild and a little viscous. Well done. Love the vanilla flavor. Not a bruiser. Just a solid stout.

Having this before the eclipses was a good idea, saw just how good the base was. On tap at GABF, poured thick black with nice tan head, aroma was full of roast, coffee, chocolate, toffee, molasses, big dark fruit notes as well in there. Taste is nice roast, toffee, chocolate, coffee notes going into some sweet dark fruit, finishing with a hint of heat and some more roast.

Draft at GABF. The base beer for Imperial Eclipse. Pours pitch black with a tan head. Nose is great, very chocolate forward and roasty. Milk chocolate, faint hops and a hint of dark fruit. On taste, the roast keeps this very balanced. Good level of bitterness and lots more of that great chocolate going on. Big and rich, full bodied with a medium dry finish. Fantastic Imperial Stout for sure.
