3.4 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 11/20 ralphdot (612) - Billingham, Durham, ENGLAND - DEC 5, 2011
4.5% amber colour with a thin head, aroma of hops, a refreshing malt and hop taste, if you like hops you will like this one.
3.3 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 BlackHaddock (1709) - Shropshire, ENGLAND - APR 10, 2012
Brown 500ml bottle, reviewed 16 days before it’s best before date in Aug 2011.
Poured into an Abbot Ale tankard: good amber coloured body, the head of big bubbles soon filtered away to a wispy covering.
The aroma is more malts than hops, unusual for an IPA. Semi-sweet molasses rule the smells, where are the hops?
The hops don’t seem to be in the initial taste either. They do come into their own in middle and later during the sip/gulps.
The 4.5% ABV sits well in the brew and although this doesn’t fit the normal IPA profile you’d expect it’s a pleasant drink.
I love Batemans beers, this one, brewed for the Aldi supermarket chain (UK) isn’t great, but it’s still worth trying considering the cost.
2.9 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 swooper (1138) - Cambridge and Kladno(Czech Rep.), Cambridgeshire, ENGLAND - JUL 25, 2011
bottle, light hoppy aroma, little bit fruity but not so much, amber, clear, white foam, medium bitterness, light sweetness, slick feel, bitter, long finish, for market beer very good. But why the hell is called India pale Ale? ...
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 imdownthepub (7491) - Banbury, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - SEP 21, 2008
Bottled, 500ml, pasteurised from Aldi, Banbury. Copper brown with white head. Approached this with trepidation, but it turned out to be not bad at all. Heavyish darkly roasted malts, ok a little tinny, sharp, with a vegetal, boiled hop note, but deep, toffeish malt. Fairly decent.
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 12/20 maeib (6637) - Wootton, Northampton, Northamptonshire, ENGLAND - AUG 3, 2009
Bottled A mid brown coloured beer with a whitish head. The aroma is a little malty with a slight cardboard note. Dry and fruity in the mouth with a little bitterness and hints of straw. Not too bad
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 11/20 Fin (5749) - Merton, Oxfordshire, England, Oxfordshire, ENGLAND - JAN 14, 2009
Bottle from Aldi, Aylesbury, Bucks, consumed 13-01-09 Pours reddy to copper in colour with an off white head. There is a reasonable tanginess to this, a slight metallic tinge which I’m sure that I detected in the one of these Aldi/Batemans beers that I had the other day. Some furry dryness, a little bitterness. Its better than expected but that’s not a ringing endorsement. A5 A4 F6 P3 OV11

Clear chestnut capped with a stable off-white head. Nose not unpleasant boiled sweetness, Werthers, caramel, musty aroma hops. Mouth marzipan, caramel, assertive bittering hop, chalky Yorkshire softness. Lingers bitterly. Not bad.

50cl bottle from Aldi, Alfreton. Copper with a thin white head; roasted malt aroma; rich chewy malt flavours but rather stewed; lacking any real finish. Not bad for an own-label.
