2.4 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 9/20 Pawola22 (2203) - Chicago, USA - FEB 10, 2012
On tap at Winterbrew. Pours a murky brown colored body with a thin, tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a moderate lacing. Aroma has some weird berry fruits, caramel, grainy bread, florals, and some honey sweetness. Flavor is similar. Grainy toast, weird tart berries, some honey florals, and caramel before this finishes slightly tart and grainy with a light sweetness. Medium length aftertaste following a medium body and a moderate carbonation. Overall, not a big fan of this one. No real wheat or smoke flavors that I was hoping for and too much of a weird berry tartness. Eh...
2.9 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 13/20 NobleSquirrel (2677) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 10, 2011
Draft at Hop Leaf. Pours a hazy reddish tan with a dissipating off white head. Nose is distinctly raspberries. Some rose notes and floral honey. On tasing, light and slight tartness. Raspberry again and distinct rose petals. No real wheat beer qualities, save for a bread finish. Really strange and lacking smoke or the appropriate character, but fails as any sort of weizen.
3.4 AROMA 6/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 TheAlum (3299) - Lisle, Illinois, USA - NOV 4, 2011
Draft on tap at City Provisions (Chicago, IL). Swung by to check out the latest Finch beer. Pours a murky brownish hue with some glowing sun tea and reddish notes, a good haze with a decent frothy offwhite head that dies to a decent film, laces ok. Aromas are dashes of wheat, carmelized malts, dry bread, toast, some honey sweetness. Touches of red fruit, some estery fruit, a bit dry and toasty though with some touches of peppery spice. Initial is medium bodied, offering a honey sweetness mixed into toast, some gentle flaked wheat and biscuits, mellow carmelization lingers on. Further in the beer picks up some smoke, cherrywood seems to be the culprit, preaching some fruity and earthy smoke, dryness. A bit bland into the middle, the finish leaving a decent dry and toasty essence, light lingering gentle smoke. Interesting, not your typical Dunkelweizen as the cherrywood essence gives it some life into the backend and finish. Not bad, but perhaps a touch underbodied and loses some of it’s fruity roots. Interesting with an interesting smokey twist. Aroma is lacking, flavor is solid, a bit underbodied.
