Bottle sampled at DLD ’12. Pours a hazy amber color with an eggshell head. Loads of caramel, with dark fruits, toasted brown sugar, whiskey, and oak. Medium-bodied, with moderate carbonation and a smooth, warm mouthfeel. Not as bad as others have said; I thought this was decent.
2.5 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 10/20 Pawola22 (2203) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - MAR 25, 2012
22oz bottle from Armanetti’s (6.5% ABV). Pours a murky brown, ruby tinted body with a finger-width, creamy, light tan head that dissipates slowly and leaves a solid lacing. Aroma is heavy vanilla, sweet caramel, and wood. Whiskey, weird orange notes, slightly bready toffee, and dark fruit. Flavor is similar. Very sweet and cloying caramel up front with that weird orange note and lots of vanilla. Lots of toffee-bread, dark fruits, and a heavy whiskey woodiness. A light spice as the sweetness continues to grow and this finishes dry from the wood, but cloyingly sweet. Lots of vanilla, caramel, and woody whiskey in a lengthy aftertaste with an alcohol burn. Full, slightly sticky body and a light carbonation. Overall, not the biggest fan of this one. As it warms a bit, that weird orange note dies, but the big caramel, vanilla, and whiskey barrel never completely comes together. Drinks bigger than the 6.5% ABV, which is not good. Eh...

FoBAB 11’ Still waiting for Finch to impress me. This beer was pretty lack luster IMO.
3 AROMA 4/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 6/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Swalden28 (2656) - McKinney, Texas, USA - JAN 21, 2012
Bottle thanks to ericandersnavy. Pours a brown with ruby hues and a tan head. Aroma of primarily vegitable, hints of dark fruit and brown sugar, thats all I get. Flavor of burnt caramel, spicy, malty and a bit of alcohol heat. Medium-heavy mouthfeel with medium-high carbonation. Overall, besides aroma, not bad!
2.6 AROMA 5/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 5/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 8/20 crossovert (2788) - Wisconsin, USA - JAN 17, 2012
650ml bottle.
It pours a dark brown with a large, foamy off-white head that leaves no lacing.
The smell is overpowered by oak and bourbon. Think a lost abbey bba beer. It is reminiscent of Angels Share. Tons and tons of vanilla, caramel, and wood. There is a hint of fruitiness underneath. Hardly a traditional doppelbock.
The mouthfeel is thick, the flavor is far form traditional. If you are looking for a solid doppelbock, this is NOT one. It is like an American strong ale. Very tannic, lots of wood notes, velvety bourbon and vanilla dominate the flavor.
I am docking it because it isn’t traditional but it isn’t that bad of a beer.
1.1 AROMA 2/10 APPEARANCE 2/5 TASTE 2/10 PALATE 2/5 OVERALL 3/20 jrallen34 (3445) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - DEC 30, 2011
bottle... if there was one beer from Fobab, this wasn’t it... ugly medium brown with a bit of amber, no carbonation at all... the aroma is pretty bad, glue, marshmellows, and brandy, weird "whiskey" notes, spice, with a vomit finish, yum... taste is horrendous, alcohol, wood, nail polish, a coconut finish... horrible horrible horrible

Pours cloudy brown with an off white head. Light aroma of whiskey, sweet malt. Touch of spices in there. Decent.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20 Lubiere (6988) - Ottawa, Ontario, CANADA - NOV 17, 2011
A hazed reddish copper ale with a thin mocha head. In aroma, a smooth caramel malt with light woody notes, light doughy notes. In mouth, a smooth nutty malt with light wooden notes, vanilla, warming alcohol, treacle and molasses, quite nice. On tap at FoBAB 2011.
3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20 NobleSquirrel (2677) - Chicago, Illinois, USA - NOV 14, 2011
Draft at Fobab 9. Pours a murky reddish with a fizzy head. Nose has that koval dark spiciness, soft nutmeg and cinnamon. Not over the top, though. Some whiskey notes, but really a quite malty beer. Modestly spicy on the taste then a burly malt backbone. Pretty well rounded but not a particularly great beer. Barrel is well integrated and rounds this one out. Some graininess in the finish and a touch astringent. Decent.
