A deep red malt-forward ale brewed with plenty of caramel malts and a touch of rye, brewed and dry-hopped with Palisade and Zythos hops.

Interesting name. I wonder what the reason for it is. Nice pour, a rich amber body with a sustained ecru head. Lots of thick lace. The aroma is caramel laden, spiced up a bit by some floral and peach notes. The flavor follows suit accompanied by a peach pit bitterness that lingers for quite some time. It’s not as sweet as the mention of caramel implies, and the sturdy ABV never shows itself in the flavor, just in the aftereffects. Not a bad brew.

Bottle. Pours a clear amber orange with a tan head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has a good amount of bread and grains with a bit of hoppiness underlying. Flavor has lots of bread and grain with some pine hops coming through in the finish.

Can shared. Pours dark amber with minimal head. Smell of sweet caramel and piney hops. Taste of same with a little smokey taste. Decent beer.

Transfer from BA review on 3-16-14- Served on tap in a pint glass Appearance – The beer is served a slightly hazy reddish amber color with a two finger head of a just off white colored foam. The head has a moderate level of retention, slowly fading to leave a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass. Smell – The aroma of the beer is heaviest of a bready and caramel smell mixed with some aromas of rye. Along with these aromas are a lighter showing of some hoppy smells being mostly of an earthy and pine nature and mixed with a little bit of grapefruit as well. Even while the nose was rather light overall, it was quite pleasant. Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter caramel and rye bready taste. As the flavor moves on, the rye grows slightly stronger while the bready and caramel flavors all grow slightly lesser in potency. All the while hop flavors get stronger on the tongue. The hop start out predominantly of a grapefruit nature, but this flavor is soon lost as more flavors of pine and earth come to the tongue more toward the middle and the end of the flavor profile. Of the hop, the pine flavors get strongest at the end and with the mix of flavors that is there at this time, the profile ends up leaving a still moderately sweet but crisper, nicely hopped flavor to linger on the tongue. Mouthfeel- The body of the beer is on the slightly thicker and creamier side with a carbonation level that is on the slightly lower side. Both are fantastic for the crisper but still malty and sweeter flavors of the brew in combination with all the more savory hop flavors, and overall create a nice mouth coating feel by allowing all the hop and rye flavors to be soaked into the tongue. Overall – A rather nice rye amber brew with a good blend of sweeter rye, bread, and hop. While not out of this world, it is a nice drinker none the less.

Appearance: amber, with orange and maroon highlights and a short, creamy light tan head, and minimal lacing. Aroma: caramel malts, pine and citrus hops, hint of black pepper and yeast. Taste: as the aroma indicated. Finish: lingering light resinous bitterness. Notes: Felt more like a Rye Pale Ale than a strong ale, as it was not overly strong or boozy. Relatively balanced between caramel malts (with a bit of rye spice) and some citrus and pine hops. Reasonable, but not remarkable.

9/1/14. Happy Labor Day, I suppose. My wife and I were the only two in the restaurant. It was kind of nice, actually. A good burger and a couple of okay beers at one of my favorite hangs. I suppose I should get on with this rating, though, right? So anyway, I had this at Bleu Pub from a 16oz can served in a pint glass. Murky brown pour with a small, thick tan head that stuck around and mildly laced the glass. Rich aroma. I was thrown a little bit as they had this marked on their menu as an "amber ale" or something like that and I had to read the can to figure out what it really was and then look on here. If I had been handed this blindly, I’m not sure what I would have guessed... barleywine or an old ale or something like that, I suppose. Anyway, the rich aroma covered a nuttiness, rich dark fruits, a hint of a cardboardy aspect, some spice. Rich flavor as well, malty as all heck, some dark pit fruits, nutty, a touch of biscuitiness and rich toasted caramel. Not bad, pretty rich, a little sweet.

When I saw this beer I weighed the pros and cons: beer named after one of my favorite punk rock songs of all time (+), tall boy can (+), 8% abv (+), made in Chicago (+), ridiculous picture (-), and into the cart at jewel it went. If they would have depicted the pig in an authentic Italian WWII wartime dress uniform it would have been 5 for 5, but dressing him like magnum PI’s boss confused me a bit. Now the beer is strong like the song, a little bitter like some of the lyrics. It packs a punch like whatever i was drinking the first time I heard this song live (probably cisco). I enjoyed the overall experience and have nothing bad to say about anything that reverts me back to yelling at the top of my lungs "RIOT SQUAD, BASH THEIR HEADS!!"
