A deep red malt-forward ale brewed with plenty of caramel malts and a touch of rye, brewed and dry-hopped with Palisade and Zythos hops.

16oz can into a nonic. Pours a slightly hazy reddish brown with a one finger white head. Not very good head retention at all but the lacing is decent leaving some clumps on the sides of the glass. Aroma is extremely malty right off the bat. Lots of caramel and toffee along with a slight bit of toast. Earthy hops are also quite prominent with some pine and tree bark. The spicy rye also makes an appearance. The flavor largely follows the aroma. Lots of caramel, toffee, and pine along with a decent amount of rye thrown in for good measure. There is a little bit of dark fruit but not prominent at all it just adds a little bit of depth. Bitterness is on the moderate side but remains restrained leading to a moderately sticky finish. Overall, a decent strong red ale and a different brew from all the IPA’s and IIPA’s out there. Another good beer from Finch’s.

Skunky and wet cardboard. The rye doesn’t really come through at all. Well hopped with a decent mouthfeel and body.

Pours a rich dense amber with very little head. Nose is rich, candyish hop character and tons of malt sweetness. Lightly spicy notes and a touch of alcohol. Flavor is a mess. Malty and astringent with an herbal/spicy hop character. Full-medium body with an abrasive palate.

Can. Pours a mostly clear brown color with a smallish white head. Nose is a little hoppy, I think, with the rye really coming through. Taste actually manages to be neither sweet nor bitter, but very malty. Really interesting...

Sample at the Big Tap In on 04/20/2013. Hazy reddish-brown color with a medium tan head that recedes steadily. Stringy lacing on the glass. Malt, pine and hops in the nose. Medium-bodied with flavors of caramel malt, resiny hops and a touch of spice. The finish is malty up front with a hoppy aftertaste. Decent overall.

Can at Wildfire Beer Dinner. Pours a deep amber with a medium white head, decent retention and lacing. Aroma is big and malty with some citrus and pine. Mouth is medium-full bodied, malt forward and bitter throughout. Chewy with caramel and orange peel, some hints of dried fruit. Decent.

From BandC. A chewy big, spiciness from the rye. Muddy reddish brown appearance. Strong but not overly syrupy. The hop choice was interesting, herbal, piney, not too pepper it kept things cleaner than it could have gone. Serving: Can

bomber - pours medium/deep amber with tan head and nice lacing. Nose is resin, grapefruit, and rye. Flavor adds caramel. Taste is fairly balanced between the sweetness and the bitterness, but the bitterness wins out in the end. Makes me want to seek out more beer from Finch’s Beer. Refreshing though it has a medium body. Would go well with guacamole.

A rich brown color, pretty opaque with a slim whitish head. Smells of a full kettle of wart boiling- a very recognizable and enjoyable scent. Strongly sweet but not overwhelmingly so, caramel, brown sugar and sweet goodness characterize this scent. Tastes good! Unabashedly sweet but in no way nauseating, and that’s coming from a couple of guys who prefer more bitter beers. The rye flavor has an understated but powerful influence on the taste, combining with a good nut-brown presence. Indeed, No hop finish to speak of, which often places a beer on the shit list, but in this case it’s not so sorely missed. There is a bit of a sweetness in the aftertaste that can be unpleasant, but overall this beer is pretty enjoyable. Mouthfeel is solid. This beer becomes better and better as you drink it (as most do). Points deducted for the after taste. Without any hop finish the sweetness seems to dissolve on your tongue like too much halloween candy. Strong and malty without being too sweet; the caramel and rye flavors blend well together. A recommended alternative for a brown.
