4.1 AROMA 9/10 APPEARANCE 3/5 TASTE 9/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 17/20
Bottle and enjoyed while watching Stanley Cup Final Game 2: Pours a very deep brown with minimal head nor lace, but some oily tears. The aroma has marzipan, oxidation, caramel, toffee, tobacco, oak, whiskey, vanilla, earthiness and a lot of the OLDE SKOOL LOVELINESS! The taste is more of the same, oak barrel, barleywineish barley overtones, well melded oxidation, a true sipping beer (aka cigar brew). Plenty of caramel and toffee notes, warming booze. Oaky tannins on the finish. I am shocked by how good this is... need to buy more.

3.5 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 14/20
Sampled at FoBAB 10 - 2012 (Chicago, IL). Pours a rich ruby copper hue, well hazed with frothy tannish head. Laces ok. Aromas are gentle hops, citrus and florals, gentle oak, toast and toffee. Initial is medium bodied, some life with grapefruit, toast, gentle toffee. Some vanilla, oak, spirit. Middle is gentle toast, toffee, rich hops. Some toast. Backend shows toffee, toast, hops. Grapefruit and citrus really show some life. Finish is richer dry hops, some toast and toffee, vanilla and oak. Solid well hopped offering. The wood adds something, but I still find myself seeing the base being better, a more solid beer, and more focused on the hops. The barrel loses some of that character here.. and obviously that was the goal but I’d rather drink regular Fascist, a pretty good Imperial Red in my opinion
