This Habanero cider was inspired by the quest for something strange and a hankering for heat during the Strange Brew Fest that happened last winter in Port Townsend. Cidermaker Chris Weir, a man who likes his spice, surprised us one day by soaking chili peppers in cider and making it taste delicious!

The combination of chili heat and tart apple, mellowed by a dash of sweet, offers a memorable fermented adventure. We encourage you to enjoy this strange and wonderful cider in any latitude with rice and beans, fish tacos, mole enchiladas, burritos of all kinds, or just a crackling bowl of chips and salsa. Made with a blend or organic Washington apples and habanero chilies. Spicy & Semi-Sweet

[Tap] Sampled at Cider Summit Chicago 2015. Golden amber color with no head on top. Aromas of green peppers, grassy notes and sweet apples. Heat levels in the taste are moderate. The pepper grows more as you drink it. Any apple notes take a backseat to the hot pepper. Good balance, with a nice dry and spicy finish that lingers forever. Very well done.

I usually don’t enjoy pepper beers, but wanted to try this one out of a general interest in whatever it is that Finnriver is doing. Pours clear chardonnay with a slight pink hue, no head. I bury my nose in the Duvel tulip and inhale...and come up sputtering and coughing. As one of the earlier raters mentions, the peppers off-gas early and a big inhale feels like stuffing wasabi paste into one’s nasal passages. But it mellows after a few minutes (even immediately upon subsequent pours from the bottle) and one gets a nice dry cider aroma with just a hint of the pepper. Flavor is also pleasingly dry, heat coming on mid- and late through the sip, slightly on the tongue but mostly on the back of the throat. Swishing it around in the mouth the bubbles release and heat goes up into the nose as well. The level of heat is just right for a pepper cider: distinctive but never masochistic.

I personally prefer their other ciders without the gimmick of heat, but this is about as well done as I could imagine.

500 ml bottle- Pours honey golden with crackly champagne like bubbles. Aroma is apples, peppery. The taste is apples, strong habanero heat, starts with a nice heat burn and builds even more as you drink it, the apples do have an overripe flavor to them. If it weren’t for the habanero peppery kick i would give this a much lower score, but i love pretty much anything with this kind of pepper spice.

Bottle. Pale champagne colour, fine carbonation. Unsweetened apple aroma with undertones of chalk and capsicum. Very dry apple flavour leads into a pleasing tingly heat with peppery character. Finish is bone dry with very persistent peppery heat deep in the throat. The base cider is exactly what I look for in a cider: nearly no residual sugars, and the chilli heat is at a perfect level. This is a fantastically successful experiment!

Clear yellow pour. Aroma of bright bell pepper. Dry pepper flavor. Fresh garden veggies. Good for someone who likes such flavors.

Poured at the cidery. Pours a clear pale gold with minimal brief bubbles. Bright fruity citric habanero nose, really showcases the flavors of the pepper as well as the heat. Creamy medium body, nearly still. Nice apple tartness and sweetness playing off against the orangey citric notes and mild sharp heat from the peppers on the mid palate. Warming finish.

Bottle, from memory. The concept for this one is just wacky enough to work, so wanted to try it. First impression was harsh because the peppers gas off right after pouring, so if you breath them in, you’ll cough. Once they fume off a bit, it’s fine. Aroma is mild apple with peppers in the mix. Taste is relatively dry with a minor amount of heat. I’d say it works ok, but it’s not compelling, and once is probably enough for me.

On tap at The Beer Mongers, pours a clear yellow with a small white head. Aroma brings out loads of extremely dry apple and habanero upfront. Flavour begins with dry apple, transitioning to habanero peppers which longer on and on. No residual sweetness to ruin this. Wonderful spicy cider.

On draught at saraveza fire and brimstone fest - pours like white wine. Nose of cider with a hint of habanero. Taste of dry cider with habanero spice backend. Very nice cider. ---Rated via Beer Buddy for iPhone

From bottle at 2013 Cider Summit PDX. Clear pale yellow color. Habañero heat fills the nose, but is tempered by sweet apple aroma. Taste is dry habañero spice, followed quickly by sweet apple smoothness. Spice is lingering, but not overpowering.
