On tap at the brewpub 8/26/05: Dark red with thin to zero head. A mere slight caramel tone defines the flavor with a stark malt undertow. Drinkable, but not notable. Sledge, this wasn’t that bad, bro!

On tap at the brewpub. This was touted as being cask conditioned. It is a brown beer. Very thin looking. Very highly carbonated with big bubbles. The head was gone before the bartender could get the glass to me from the tap. Quite overcarbonated, indeed. A slight caramel aroma exists. Alcohol is the dominant flavor. The tongue burns. A caramel malt flavor emerges followed by a bitter finish. This is the best beer served here, but that is not saying much. I have greatly over-rated all the beers made at Firehouse Brewing because I want to be supportive of the concept of revitalizing an old building in a tiny remote town in Iowa with virtually no tourists or viable way to sustain a brewpub. It’s just that they are in desperate need of a brewer who actually knows how to make beer.
