COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
We are extremely honored to present to you our 13th Anniversary barrel aged blend! This is our fourth barrel aged release and each year is another adventure into the flavor unknown. Our oak aging cellar continues to grow and so do the blending possibilities. We peaked at just over 120 barrels in our program this year, yet only 53 barrels made this year’s final blend. We have stayed true to our original goal of making straight ahead strong ales and letting them rest in wood barrels to mature and develop flavors slowly and naturally. We again met with some of the area’s best wine makers and allowed them to guide us to the finished product. Most of the beers that are in this blend are old friends who we know well. Dark and ominous Parabola along with the rich and complex Bravo Brown were brewed again this year and together became the center piece of this blend. Other beers like the Rufus and Opal along with Sean Paxton’s Saucerful of Secrets are still tucked away in the cellar in their original first generation form, gaining character with extended aging. Velvet Merkin has established itself as a real barrel loving beer, although it is only 6%, it carries barrel qualities beautifully. A new beer, that was created this year by our Cellar Master Ali Razi, is Double Double Barrel Ale and it found its way into this blend as well. In the end, this year brought us seven wine makers and seven beers to counter balance our lucky thirteenth year of brewing beer on the Central Coast. The brewery is alive and well and oak is as much a part of our program today as it was back in 1996!

As a finished beer, 13 is more sublime then last year’s blend. It is all about the subtleties and quiet tones. It has deep dark chocolate notes and is accented with dried fruit and licorice. There are hints of molasses and even a little cherry in the middle complimenting the vanilla and coconut notes brought in by the oak. These barrel qualities are very well integrated and meld well with the roast malt and caramel undertones. It is best enjoyed in a half filled brandy snifter or wine glass. Allow it to warm to 55F to fully enjoy the pleasing and complex aromas. If left in a cool dark place, I suspect that this beer will age well. It was a pleasure in the making and I truly hope you enjoy our fourth oak- aged blend!

12/4/09 from 22oz bottle. Aroma is a ton of chocolate, molasses, dark plum, leather and vanilla. Appearance is very dark brown with a low brown head. Flavor is never overpowering and suprisingly smooth with more rich red fruit coming through and some true candy sweetness, awesome. Mouthfeel is full bodied, not quite syrupy with warmth you never quite catch on the palette. Overall, impressive, and at this young age takes even longer to open up than the 12.

Bottle thanks to WeeheavySD! Pours a nice oily black. Aroma is caramel, bourbon, vanilla. Flavor is caramel, bourbon, booze, vanilla. Great mouth.

Bottle from Daily Pint ... ton of vanilla, chocolate, and oak. Really oaky, rich. Not nearly as hot and raw as I remember the other anniversary ales being when fresh. No alcohol burn ... smooth sipping. Big mouthfeel but easy going down. Carbonation is perfect for the beer. Really good ... but not mind blowing.

Bottle thanks to WeeheavySD, thanks Jon! Pours with a deep brown body and a fading off-white head. Aroma of oak, booze, more wood, chocolate and brown sugar. Decently bitter. Taste is oak, chocolate, wood, booze, brown sugar and cinnamon. Medium to light bubbles. Needs a ton more age. I actually think that 12 is the best beer in the series so far (although this has potential, a bit hot and young right now).

Bottle from HH22, thanks tim. Shared with swolf. Poured into a snifter, dark muddy black color, thin tan head. Aroma of dark fruits, some bourbon, roasted malts. Taste is a blend/mix between a quad and a stout. Lots of dark fruits and roasted malt taste but neither one dominating the taste buds. Sweetness to it...Blended well together, easy to drink for 12 percent. The alcohol isnt even noticable, Overall a unique beer that I glad I tried but wouldnt bend over backwards to get again.

Thanks to JW77 for this one! Pours a very dark brown with a small head. Chocolate, coconut, caramel, vanilla, toffee, wood, fruit and some brandy like qualities. Flavor is sweet and delicious. Tons vanilla, oak, caramel, toffee, brandy, honey, brown sugar, dark agave nectar. Damn this is good. Really really good!

22oz bottle. Pours black with a tint of dark brown around the edges. Medium head fades quickly to just a bit left on the glass. Big coconut and nutty bourbon aroma. Taste has coconut, chocolate, vanilla, and dominant bourbon, but it’s not over the top. The coconut really sticks out, which I love. Smooth as can be, and even at 12% ABV I could take down a bottle of this by myself (don’t worry, I shared with Jeanne). There is a taste of alcohol, but no burn and it doesn’t detract. Moderate thickness. This is just a really wonderful blend. Part of me would love a little more stout in this, but it’s hard to argue with what it is. Nicely done.

Bottle shared by largadeer on BA, who is a good guy to live near as far as beer is concerned. Great packaging, although I would have appreciated it more if they had skipped the shiny silver box and knocked a couple bucks off the price of this beer. I was lucky enough to pick a few bottles up at Whole Foods Los Altos for $20 apiece, and after tasting this, I’m glad I shelled out the cash for those. Pours black in color with a one finger tan head and some lacing. Aroma is lots of caramel, toffee, roast, chocolate, and vanilla. Flavor is complex and awesome with roasted, caramel, and chocolate malts all apparent, rich chocolate, molasses, sweet toffee, syrup, brown sugar, spices, vanilla, oak, and even some dark fruits. Yeah it’s all here. This beer exceeded the high expectations I had for it. Palate is incredibly smooth and creamy with fairly full body, with only a little booze despite the young age, hiding the 12% ABV very well. Even stood up to Black Tuesday fairly well, and that’s saying something.

On tap, release party. Pours black with a small tan head. I must say, aroma is far sweeter than I expected. However, complexity prevails: the nose has sweet candied almonds, black licorice, rum cherries, mocha. Big wow flavor here. Palate is silky smooth, the alcohol is supremely blended into the overall flavor. The blend leans on the sweeter side, but as stated earlier I am kept interested by the hazelnut, Belgian chocolate, white chocolate and a pinch of red wine. I’d love a second shot at this, but this teaser managed to satiate my interest in this special release!
