Very complex. I feel like there is an intense alcohol bite that is similar to a barley wine flavor. Some more aging might help this mellow more. A really good beer that shows how successful blending can be.

3.7 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 3/5 OVERALL 15/20
22oz bottle picked up locally somewhere herein Chicago - missed it on tap on a few locations... Pours just pale of cola black, more of a twang port coloration with less intense edges and topped with a thin ring of light khaki head that reduces to a film around the edges of the glass... Barrel forward aroma with bourbon, chocolate, a modicum of char while waftings of coconut and marshmallow and candy-like inklings of tootsie rolls mingle to and fro. While the barrel notes take precedence, it doesn’t seem overly boozy or harsh in any way. Smooth, sweet, and nice blend of various notes... Flavors are more of the aforementioned with somewhat more brash of a presence overall. Bourbon, roast, touch of coffee, sweeter dark fruit and vanilla throughout. Hints of burnt toast through mid-palate. Onset starts sweet and smooth but a firm gripping bitterness slowly creeps in, sinks its teeth, and grips through until the finish and a little further beyond that. The tailend is a bit aggressive though which takes away from its upfront enjoyability. Medium bodied, not too heavy really and pairs with an expected level of carbonation but perhaps a bit too lively with its prickliness. Nice sipper all around although the backend needs to settle down just a touch. I liked it.

Bottle. Dark like a midnight sky without starts, covered with a firm fluffy blanket of light tan foam. The aroma is an amazing invitation, rife with muscular whiskey and raisin. This drinks with a wonderfully warming alcohol burn, running over with an amazingly lurid blend of amazing flavors -- a bit of molasses, honey, cocoa, oak ... This is a masterpiece. 4 AROMA 8/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 8/10 PALATE 4/5 OVERALL 16/20
Bottle at the Moth. Dark brown to black with a brown head. The aroma is very complex. I get some huge bourbon, oak and maple notes, as well as a little bit of anise. The flavor is equally impressive. The charred oak and bourbon notes really come through strongly. There is also some vanilla and maple, as well as some roasted malt and brown sugar. Wow. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Really glad I got to try this one.

Clear medium brown colour with a small to average, frothy, fair lacing, mostly diminishing, off-white head. Aroma is moderate to heavy malty, roasted, caramel, vanilla, coconut, light bourbon. Flavour is moderate to heavy sweet and bitter with a long duration, vanilla, laberlaver (bourbon). Body is medium, texture is oily, carbonation is soft. Nice ;O)

Served in my Figueroa Mountain pint glass for a little irony. Pours a nearly opaque, dark cola brown with ruby glints around the bottom edge of the glass. A short, caramelized sugar colored head forms and fades just as quickly--in true FW fashion. Chocolate syrup out of the gate, coconut, ripe banana, and brown sugar on the nose. Mouthfeel is thick, wet, slick, but nearly flat. Flavors of coconut and sweet caramel. Some chocolate notes emerge and some oak vanilla also break through. There’s an alcohol warmth in the back of the throat at the finish that tends to migrate into the olfactory. Gets a little to boozy for my liking. Double DBA is far better.

4.1 AROMA 7/10 APPEARANCE 4/5 TASTE 7/10 PALATE 5/5 OVERALL 18/20
From the tap, an opaque brown with a dusty aroma of dark fruits and oak. Full body. You can tell this is a blend but its done so well. Not bitter, not sweet. Excellent flavors of fruit, sugar, wood, and smoke. Finish is not too dry. Quite enjoyable.

Pours dark mahogany into a tulip. Tan head with little retention recedes leaving no lacing. Vanilla, oak, pit fruit and chocolate aromas. Thin with hot chocolate, pit fruit and vanilla upfront turning to bitter espresso in the lasting finish.
