COMMERCIAL DESCRIPTION
As a finished beer, XVII is dark, rich and complex. The lead beers of the blend are Bravo, a lean and oak-forward imperial brown ale and Stickee Monkee, a huge brown sugar infused barley wine. These beers are beautiful on their own but together they bring rich molasses drenched oak flavors and cinnamon glazed almond aromas lifted by high alcohol. In the middle of the blend are our two favorite stouts, Parabola and Velvet Merkin, working in concert to provide a dusty cocoa mocha aroma and bitter dark chocolate flavors. Somehow together in this blend I am reminded of Bourbon-soaked chocolate chip cookie dough! Double DBA makes the blend again this year, bringing its signature vanilla-infused crème brulée flavor. Helldorado, our blonde barley wine, helps to bring balance with its honey notes and light leather nuances. Like last year, a dash of Wookey Jack made the cut bringing with it some fresh hop notes derived from bold Citra and Amarillo creating even more interesting complexity. All together I find XVII to be full of soft chocolate and warm spice perfectly balanced by toasted coconut, bourbon barrel notes and smooth creamy malt mellowness. The finished blend is unfiltered and unfined, so there will be a small amount of sediment in the bottom of the bottle. XVII is best enjoyed poured carefully into a half-filled brandy snifter or red wine glass. Allow it to warm to 55F to fully enjoy the pleasing and complex aromas. It takes a while, but as this beer sits and breathes in the glass, more rich chocolate and spice character is revealed as the ethereal spirit characters dissipate - so take your time. If you wait to open your bottle later, store it in a cool dark place. I suspect that this beer will age well and change favorably for years to come. It was an absolute pleasure in the making and I truly hope you enjoy our eighth oak-aged blend. The journey continues and it’s just as fun and exciting now as it was back in 1996. Thank you so much for spending a little time with us!

Bottle one year old ish. Pours hazy dark brown with light edges and some legs. Aroma just goes on and on spicy hops dominate then booze then all kinds of sweet and richness--oak , vanilla, dough, chocolate, tobacco very light raisin oxidation. Flavor is big sweet wood and spice and deeply umami salty smoked vegetable finish. Feel is slick dense kinda tight and drying. Really wish I had 10 more bottles of this.

Flaske. Købt i en bewmo i petaluma. Super duft af bourbon. Meget let mindfylde. En chuckable bourbon, men samtidig tydelig øl. Helt fantastisk. Super øl.

On tap at Simmzy’s Long Beach and poured into a snifter. Translucent dark brown body with a thin tan head that hangs around as a thin ring. No lacing. Aroma is barrel-forward: charred oak, coconut, vanilla, bourbon. There are also dark fruits, brown sugar, and caramel notes plus a touch of leafy hops. Taste is complex and inviting: sweet caramel and brown sugar sweetness up front with woody and leafy bitterness on the back of the palate. Some boozy hotness and dark fruits on the swallow. An ample medium body, slick and viscous texture, low carbonation, sweet finish with some heat.

Bomber. Dark brown pour with a sudsy layer of tan foam and bubbles. Aroma is dominated by roasted malt, charred oak and bittersweet chocolate along with some toffee, vanilla and coconut in the background. Taste delivers a strong shot of bourbon, espresso and dark chocolate upfront followed by notes of caramelized sugar, dark fruits and rum. Mouthfeel is sufficiently full-bodied and chewy with medium carbonation and a final dose of charred malt and whiskey in the finish. The overall flavor is predominately Bourbon Barrel Imperial Stout with a touch of Quad. A fine dessert beer.

22 oz bottle. Deep brown with beige suds. Nose is caramel, chocolate, raisin, vanilla, sherry and wood. Creamy medium body with a soft tang. Taste is bourbon, caramel, chocolate, candied citrus peel, dates and marzipan. Finishes dry with grass and wood. Dare i say this is dialed back as compared to earlier iterations?

Bottle split at Bruce’s pad, thanks to the host with the most, 04/11/14. Mahogany brown with a decent ligh tan covering. Nose is toasted malt, coconut tones, nice BBA effect, brown sugars, light booze, spice, chocolate melt. Taste comprises sweet licks, dark malts, sweet toffee, trickle of booze, cocoa, toasted brown sugar, bourbon tunes. Full bodied, fine carbonation, massageing on the palte, sweet close tempered with a lick of booze. Solid stuff.
