american wild red ale

As the name implies, this is a rustic red ale. Agrestic has a long lineage of oak-barrel influence: First, as DBA, it is fermented in our legendary Union Barrel Fermentation system. If that isn’t exciting enough, it is then transferred to a tank and inoculated with a proprietary lactobacillus-thus beginning the Agrestic transformation. Then, it is racked into barrels where it is inoculated with Brettanomyces Lambicus. This foundation of DBA with microflora is made more complex through 14 months of maturation in American and French Oak barrels (40%/60% ratio). The result is a remarkable blend of rustic flavors and textures: barrel-derived tannins, woody, nutty(toasted almonds) malt nuances, dried tart cherry fruit, thirst quenching acidity, and a hint of vanilla and all-spice in the background. A thoroughly enjoyable beverage! Draft only, extremely limited

Appearance: Pours an amber brown with a white ring of head.

Aroma: Sweet tart candy, bready malt, grandmas house.

Taste: Bready malt ,tartness. Vinegar.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied modest bubbles.

Overall: I’m not the biggest DBA fan, this is slightly more interesting, but not one of my favorite sours they’ve been piloting.

On tap at Birch Bar Norfolk, VA at Zwanze Day ’14, pours mostly clear rusty red with small head. Nose is musty woody fruit, dark cherry molasses, spice, toasty oak, some red grape. Taste is crisp, low sourness, fruity tart vinous berry funk, grape, and old wood. Finish is mild tartness, dry vinous berry and grape, damp wood, subtle semi sweet notes. Pretty tasty stuff.

Draft at Armsby Abbey. Color is amber with a pink hue. Aroma displays light red wine, mild Brett, mild oak and flowers.

The flavor is spot on the aromas. I never would have guessed this was a FEW brew, the body was real flimsy with a sharp lactic note. Anybody who drink with me knows this is not a style I like very much, with that being said, I didn’t mind drinking this. However, for a non sour head, I couldn’t drink more than 4 oz. of it. Well, raters got to rate and tickers got to tick.

On tap at Pinthouse Pizza. Amber pour with a white head. the aroma has some tart cherry and toffee notes. The flavor is similar. I get some really nice oak and tannic red wine notes, as well as some toffee and a good bit of tartness. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation. Very nice sour.

On tap at the Forge. Appearance: 1 finger white-khaki head, copper color, light cloudy. Aroma: oak, yeasty tart fruit, white wine. Palate: light body, dry finish, average carbonation, light bitter finish. Taste: light fruit sweetness, into a tart -sour fruit taste, and finally relenting to a light bitterness. Overall, very nicely done sour from Firestone; very unique and the balance is on key.

This American wild red was very woody, full o tannins and a little dark fruit, vanilla and spice. You could just tell the base beer was DBA. Oaky like green Monster but funky in a different way. One of the most accurate brewer’s descriptions (especially on such a complex beer) I’ve ever read."
