magine yourself in Berlin’s Tiergarten enjoying this refreshing Berliner Weisse inspired beer on a warm summer’s day. Bretta Weisse honors the traditional beverage of the great Prussian capital, Berlin. Fredrick-the-Great was trained to brew it, and Napoleon’s troops called it “The champagne of the North”. Firm estery notes of stone and tropical fruit lead to Funky, yeasty, citrus aromas. Soft cereal and Oak flavors are enveloped by a firm acidity and tartness. The finish is dry and crisp; a thoroughly enjoyable beverage. At 4.5% ABV, one could imagine enjoying several Bretta Weisse’s in the Tiergarten, or anywhere else. This Berliner Weisse inspired Wheat beer was aged in 1700 gal French Oak horizontal foeders for 8 months.

On tap at Road 34 last week. Orange and pretty clear appearance with active carbonation and a beige head. Aroma of corn, toasted grain and sour notes. Similar flavor, bready and tart with a light puckering feel. Pretty much tastes like some kind of sour cornbread beer. Crisp and kinda refreshing but just a little off.

Draft at Fire on Mountain Denver. Cloudy straw yellow. Nose of soured wheat. Nice carbonation with great mouthfeel. Light wheat, chewy, with light lemon tartness. Carbonation and chewiness on this really set it apart from many in this style.

Tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA. Pours hazy gold with a creamy white head. Aroma is tart, perhaps even Brettish, but at least citrus. Med body or so. Flavor is very tart, a bit lemon/citrus, maybe a touch of pedio, not getting much Brett - just lots of tart/sour. Some of the flavor seems from strange bacteria or yeast. Still it’s really good, and very arguably nails the style.

Draft at Sunset Grill and Tap. Clear pale yellow without head. Aroma is Sour wheat, latic acid, tart lemons. Flavor shows a balance of lactic acid with the Sour wheat/ grain and a pleasing tartness. Honestly either you like the style or you don’t. This is another finely crafted example of a Berliner. Tartness does not overwhelm and the Sour hints are low
