magine yourself in Berlin’s Tiergarten enjoying this refreshing Berliner Weisse inspired beer on a warm summer’s day. Bretta Weisse honors the traditional beverage of the great Prussian capital, Berlin. Fredrick-the-Great was trained to brew it, and Napoleon’s troops called it “The champagne of the North”. Firm estery notes of stone and tropical fruit lead to Funky, yeasty, citrus aromas. Soft cereal and Oak flavors are enveloped by a firm acidity and tartness. The finish is dry and crisp; a thoroughly enjoyable beverage. At 4.5% ABV, one could imagine enjoying several Bretta Weisse’s in the Tiergarten, or anywhere else. This Berliner Weisse inspired Wheat beer was aged in 1700 gal French Oak horizontal foeders for 8 months.

Pours a hazy golden with a white rim that doesn’t leave any lacing. Nose is of sour wheat and that’s about it. Taste is moderately tart and dry, lemony. Light to mediun body, medium carbonation. Refreshing and fun but I must echo what Minderbinder underlined: Simple. Not much funk and mostly lactic.

Draft. Clear golden appearance with a small white head. Lemony aroma, cereal grains. The flavor is light and tart. A touch of sweet malt, yielding to lemony bretty/lactic notes. Fairly light, crisply tart, average carbonation. Not really a Berliner Weiss, but good.

Sample at Sour’d. Poured a greenish-yellow with a smaller foamy white head. Aroma/flavor is sort of bland. Notes of light lemon, wheat, grainy. Medium body with light carbonation and a quicker fading aftertaste.

Draft 8 oz pour at Stogies and Hops. Pours a clear golden color with a soft fizz head. Mild apple sour fruit aroma. Flavor is nicely tart with some apple and a big wheat background. Refreshing and tart at its finest. Delicious. Solid beer here.

Draught@CBC2015. Slightly hazy orange colour with a small white head. Aroma is zest, some honey, mild wooden notes along with quite sweet tropical fruity notes. Flavour is farmyard, some mild funky earth as well as mild fruity and wooden notes to it. Somewhat dry palate.

On tap at Road 34 last week. Orange and pretty clear appearance with active carbonation and a beige head. Aroma of corn, toasted grain and sour notes. Similar flavor, bready and tart with a light puckering feel. Pretty much tastes like some kind of sour cornbread beer. Crisp and kinda refreshing but just a little off.
