magine yourself in Berlin’s Tiergarten enjoying this refreshing Berliner Weisse inspired beer on a warm summer’s day. Bretta Weisse honors the traditional beverage of the great Prussian capital, Berlin. Fredrick-the-Great was trained to brew it, and Napoleon’s troops called it “The champagne of the North”. Firm estery notes of stone and tropical fruit lead to Funky, yeasty, citrus aromas. Soft cereal and Oak flavors are enveloped by a firm acidity and tartness. The finish is dry and crisp; a thoroughly enjoyable beverage. At 4.9% ABV, one could imagine enjoying several Bretta Weisse’s in the Tiergarten, or anywhere else. This Berliner Weisse inspired Wheat beer was aged in 1700 gal French Oak horizontal foeders for 8 months.

Tasted on 1/29/15 from a capped 500mL bottle, big thanks to Chuck for hooking me up with this one. Pours hazy golden orange with an average white head that recedes to thin, bubbly lace before completely disappearing. The nose is nice and tart with a touch of cereal wheat and caramel malt, a light pitted fruitiness, and some nicely spicy funk. The flavor is much the same tart lemon peel and light pitted fruit, with just a touch of cereal wheat malt and nice dry funk. The body is light with lively carbonation and a medium touch of fruity tart and dry funky finish.

Bottle thanks to dogday. Hazy yellowish-gold pour with a small bubbly head that quickly fades to a very thin ring. Aromas are sour lemon juice, light yogurt funk, light barnyard and pineapple. Light sourness in the taste. Moderately acidic. Lots of lemon, some wood, light pineapple, and a woody finish. Light body. Easy to drink.

Bottle: The aroma moderate-heavy citrus, lemon, funk, and mild must. It pours a hazy golden-orange with a small white head that quickly fades to a minimal film outlined by a very fine ring. The flavor starts with a good dose of tart citrus. The finish has light-moderate lemon, must, lemon peel, and orange. It’s light bodied with light-moderate carbonation. Overall, not so much a Berliner, but a really good Sour Ale.

Bottle: Cloudy, bright sunshine yellow body with a quickly fleeting white head that is completely gone in a few seconds. Aroma of sour lemon, tart lacto yeast, musty hay, vanilla yogurt, stone fruit, a nice waft of sweaty jockstrap funk, & some old pineapple. Bright flavor; tons of zesty lemon, stone fruit, citrus, & pineapple. Less funk on the palate, but some modest hay & must notes are hidden in the periphery. Nice graininess & sour wheat note with a small touch of lacto & wood leading into a super dry finish. Light bodied, high carbonation that fits the style. Goddamn solid Berliner.

Bottle... Hazy straw-colored pour with a small, quickly dissipating, white head. The nose is a citrusy blend of key lime and lemon meringue accompanied by subtle breadiness. Light to medium-bodied with jazzy carbonation. The flavor is so very sour and citric with a crisp, tart, snappy finish. Pulls up just shy of being world class. Bottle courtesy of the ever-generous 50belair!
