DDBA is our flagship beer brewed at double strength. It is amazingly similar in many respects to our barrel fermented DBA and possesses everything we love about that beer times two. English caramel malts lend rich toffee character that pairs well with assertive medium toast American oak barrels.

On tap, clear mohagany pour with small off white head. Aroma of bourbon, cherries, vanilla, caramel and oak. Taste of toffee, vanilla, bourbon, oakiness, hint of gran marnier, and roasted coconut. ABV a little hot until it warmed up closer to room temps. A little less of the bourbon taste would have scored this much higher, very good beer nonetheless.

Two barrels and neither of them were very good. There just wasn’t much good to say about this beer. Aroma, not good. Appearance was sub par. Taste was so so at best. After taste was no good.

Bottle from LUSH. Poured quite dark amber with moderate white head full of sediment. Strong bourbon barrel aroma, stings a lil. Quite smooth balanced bourbon taste, hides booze well. Good stuff.

Bottle; Pour is fairly clear mahogany with a modest, fine bubbled, off white head in this glass; retention is fairly poor, honestly - leading to a ring and light spotting. The nose is nice, overall - barrel treatment comes through fairly heavily , with some earthy vanilla notes present here - moving to toffee and dark fruits, really, while revealing a hint of booze that is slightly off putting. The flavor profile reveals a fairly thin base beer as far as the mouthfeel goes; its assertively sweet (caramel, toffee, vanilla), while moving to dark fruits, toasted breads, modest bitter hop notes, with a tingling sensation from the booze here ; this one , i feel, could use a bit of age. I enjoyed it, overall.

On tap in Philly Dark amber with off white head and no lace. Bourbon nose with a bit of cereal. Mouthfeel is a little thin for all the malt, toffee and boutbon flavors. No heat, hides the alcohol

Brouwerij (959) - Boulder, Colorado, USA - SEP 4, 2013
Bottle. Pours a mostly clear, burnt copper, red orange, with rapidly settling, coarse off white head. No lacing. Aroma is oaky, sweet, alcohol, malty, nice barrel quality. Flavor is caramel, toffee, malt, with strong barrel overtones. Oaky, vanilla, sweet alcohol, caramel, finish. Soft carbonation, medium body. Very good.

if you are going to do a FW barleywine, stick to the Sucaba. this one pales in comparison. still good, but not nearly as complex.

On tap in a snifter at Flanny’s. Sweet, refined bourbon aroma (not an overpowering booziness like many barrel-aged brews) with a touch of charred oak and tannins and an almost sweet red wine/port punchiness on the back end. Deep, clear mahogany in color with a faint cream-colored head. Sweet bourbon (again, without a ton of heat) and resiny caramel dominate the taste with some toffee, burnt brown sugar, and a bit of earthy hoppiness and dark fruit before a sweet finish somewhat reminiscent of balsamic vinegar. The booziness grows a bit toward the end, but it’s a pleasant heat that complements the other tones. Rich, resiny texture with a sweet, brief finish. A deserved addition to the great lineup of Firestone Walker’s Proprietors Reserve series.
