Draft. A single-hopped, all-pale malt barleywine aged in brandy and bourbon barrels? Interesting. Molten gold in hue and slightly hazy, with a thin head of pure white. Peach, booze, plum, vanilla, butterscotch and caramel in the nose. The flavor is sweet, vibrant and very fruity, swirling with plum, juicyfruit, mango, pear, vanilla, caramelized sugar and peach. A nice booziness and hints of green oak emerge as well. The medium-light body has sugars that stick to the tongue, but the beer doesn’t come across as heavy. Fruity and flavorful.

Sample at the brewery. Very pale, thin white head. Sweet malt with a tang of citrus, but both give way to the rich vanilla oak character, dominating the underlying beer. Some alcohol burn, but finish is smooth, coconutty and rich. Couldn’t drink more than a few ounces but very nice.

>> Pours murky deep orange with okay foam. Slightly off nose with mildew and tequila..moves to butter pecan, white chocolate macadamia, something says bourbon barrel in the nose, but doesn’t look like this beer is even barrel aged. Taste is cookie dough, white chocolate macadamia dessert, honey butter. Really nice all around.

On tap at HAF14. Pours a cloudy light brown color with a medium white head. A big sweet fruity malty tea nose. The flavor is huge mellow round malts, toffee, bready, sweeter cakes, a bit of fresh sweet hops. Clean. Very big and clean. Drinkable.

On tap at World of Beer. Appearance: slight white head, cloudy, rich amber color, good lacing. Aroma: honey, raisin, light caramel, oak. Palate: medium body, light alcohol. Taste: honey and raisin sweet that lasts a long while, with a heavy booze coming in towards the end that is not well masked. Overall, not that impressive, too sweet for my taste. Low on my totem pole for this style.

My personal favorite of the AV party! As one of the main components of the 15, I ended liking it as much or maybe even better than the blend. intense aroma and flavor of honeysuckle and vanilla. not much hop presence, but not needed...this is simply delicious. i returned to it several times, and with what they were pouring, that says a lot! this blonde barleywine is one of the most unique brews i;ve had in a long while."

Draft on tap at Lions Tiger Beers 2014 (Chicago, IL). Pours a hazy amber orange hue, a bit darker in body with gentle orange glow trailing out to the edges. Frothy offwhite head is a nice filmy layer with decent ring and lacing. Aromas are a bit bready, sweet and gentle honey, caramel elements meet biscuit, dry earthy hops and gentle whiskey and vanillin trails a bit. Initial is medium bodied, a bit lighter with some sticky honey, caramel, gentle bready elements with touches of oak, vanillin. Mellow spirit shows touches of whiskey, earthy dry hops are floral and a faint waft of fruit. Middle is a touch tannic with gentle bready malts. Touches of honey, caramel and bread. A touch dry and barrel driven, earthy hops and a bit of sweetness. Ok, not really my thing but well constructed. Can see the value of it in blends. Pretty sure this is oaked/barreled which the description does not say here.

Draft at Good Dog during a FW event. Hazy amber blonde pour with a slight foamy white head. Heady vanilla caramel. Medium light body with a honey coating at the end. Kumquats. Has some wonderfully bright notes for a Barleywine along with a strong caramel malty backbone. Anbesol.
